This is a much better question than which one because there is no one and there is also no-one who would only have one. I'll even make it centerfire and assume .22 LR doesn't count toward the two.

Since I won't be hunting big bears or moose, and since I don't like long shots and I do like compact rifles, I'll take both of mine from the .308 family and pick the .260 Rem and the .338 Federal.

mine would be 30-06 and 45 auto including 22 conversion :)

i really want my 38 specials though...

OH! you mean two centefire RIFLES...

30-06 and 30-30

22 LR and 308 Win is my first knee jerk reaction, if I thought about it more maybe that would change, but this choice is mainly based on territory, i.e. Pa. USA that's all you really need, the biggest beast in the woods is a black bear, which a 308 handloaded with 180 or 220 grain grain bullets will easily dispose of- no need for anything much more powerful than that here

if I was in Africa, the choice would change- in Africa it would be 25-06 for "small stuff" and 458 Win Mag for everything else

out west USA, it would be 22 LR and 300 Remington Ultra-Mag for the longer ranges/bigger game out there

since you are not counting rimfire, I will say 243, and then anything else bigger, maybe a 30.06. I would like something bigger, say a 375, but ammo cost becomes way to prohibitive at that point. so a big 220 grainer 30.06 , should do most of the trick.

Humm tough question. Wouldn't want to have to pick just two. But if I did it would be a 223 bolt gun for varmints and a Otto Bock's old but effective 9.3x62 for anything larger than varmints that walks on the Earth.

If ammo resupply is "off the land" in a SHTF setting, probably .45ACP and 30-06--

If ammo is never an issue, then .38 Super and .416 Barrett...

I have already made mine and most of my 'collection' mirrors that choice:

30/06 and 45 Colt!!! ;)

Yes I do have a 308 and an AR in 5.56, but I do consider the first two my main choices if I had to sell everything except a rifle and pistol!!!

BTW, the OP said to leave out the 22LR. I expect that he would like to limit the amount of 'gotta have a 22 in the mix' crowd.

260 Remington and 458 Win Mag.

If the 260 can't handle it, then it requires a 458!

Woof, although you said, "assume .22 LR doesn't count toward the two", I've got to agree with several here as I would definitely include the .22 LR in my two. It's almost ideal from a meat-on-the-table usage, the noise factor, and availability and weight of ammo.

My second choice would be a toss-up between .308 Win and 30-06.

What I meant was you get rimfire and shotgun, they don't count, and we are just picking for 2 centerfire rifle rounds. Also assume ammo is at least as available as now. I figured everyone would divide it as deer and down and deer and up.
