Hi all....first post! I've found this website to be extremely helpful ever since I got my first firearm a few years ago...so thanks to you all!

My situation: I've been preparing for SHTF for a couple years now and feel like we are getting close to that time for various reasons. I currently have a .40acp, 9mm, 12ga pump, and .22 long rifle with 30 round mags. I figure I'm pretty well rounded for a variety of scenarios, but think I need to add a high-powered rifle to be complete.

So, what would you purchase? AR, AK, or hunting rifle with option for high capacity mag? Considering ammo and rifles are becoming more expensive and less available because of the Comrade, which round would you think best?

I was at Dick's yesterday and they were completely out of 9mm and .22 long nose brass was $20/525 rounds! I went to my dealer up the road and he was completely out of 7.62 and he said people were driving from 2 hours away to buy .380 from him (I'm not sure why that round was so unavailable though). I had been hearing things like this online, but never saw it with my own eyes.

I really wanted the Sig 556, but he said there is over a year wait on production! Prices are going up up up too on all AR's. People are taking a ban seriously and the threat of civil unrest is quite plausible.

At any rate, what say you? What would you buy in my situation?

Thanks fellow patriots!

Interesting, I'm actually looking for a Ruger MkII. I have plenty of centerfire guns but it's getting too expensive too shoot as much as I'd like to.

I've pretty much given up on buying ammo locally as I get better prices and selection online. gun-deals.com is a great resource.

I am currently looking at a dsa fal or m1a since I already have a nice Remington 700. But if that's all you have I would go for a R700 (aftermarket support is huge and they have a very proven track record).Stock up on ammo after that.

My FIL has a mini-30 but I haven't shot it yet. I think you get a 25 or 30 round mag for that right? It seems like a good rifle, what's the range?

223 and 308 guns would not be the best choice for someone having issues finding ammo. 30-06 or other hunting calibers would be easier to find.

Subtract 20 off your mag capacity and you're closer to the truth.

i've been wanting a bolt action centerfire rifle of some sort lately.... i'm thinkin a heavy barreled savage or remington in a common caliber like 308 or such............. the answer to high ammo cost is to reload.cast bullets, and keep your eyes open for brass and lead................

the 2nd amendment was never about hunting...................................

"a high-powered rifle to be complete"

You are correct that is why you must not buy a mid power semi auto like an AR.

.270 is very plentiful as is 7mm mag and .243

IMHO, when it comes to SHTF, it's hard to beat a good Mosin-nagant. Cheap ammo, good stopping power, marginal to outstanding accuracy depending on what subtype you get, and its just darn tough

Thats the next gun on my list

My next rifle is going to be a range toy/coyote rifle in .223.
I think I might get a 700 varmint, or get another Howa, except with a heavy barrel.
to keep my .308 company.
I don't think anything is going to happen in america any time soon.
and if it did the national guard would attempt to take our guns, so the less the better.
But if you think something is going to happen you better have a friend with a long range rifle, because the worse situation to be in would be an urban firefight..

Sounds like you're in a tough spot...

As for me, I already have 2 SKS rifles, an AR, .22's, shotguns, pistols, etc.

My next one will be a .308 semi, either a FAL or M1A. Going to be a tough decision though.
