Let me start by telling you, the rifle is a Ruger #1 in 458 Win Mag. I bought it a couple years ago because the .458 was WAY cheaper than any 45-70 I could find. My plan was to use it as a black bear gun and load at the 45-70 levels. Two years running now, I have failed to draw a bear tag, so I have not been in a big rush to get started on the loads. Next year I will draw a bear tag again, as I have more than enough preference points. Now it's time to make up the loads in preparation. Before I dig out the loading data, I thought I'd see if anyone has a good load that they would recommend. I have a variety of good cast bullets available as I do shoot a 45-90 Sharps, too. And I have shot a bear with it, so I want to use something different.

What does a good hot 45-70 load have to do with your .458 WinMag?

If you just want to duplicate 45-70 performance, any reloading manual will give you starting loads for .458 that will come pretty close to high end 45-70 loads.

But you will still have to do the load testing in 'your gun' to figure out what works best for you.

The 45-70 is a most capable cartridge, as is the .458. I fail to see the need for the term "hot". Once the 400 +- grain bullet has passed all the way through the target, the rest is just wasted energy that beats up the shooter.
I have used my Ruger #1 in 45-70 for hunting for the past 10 years or so. With it I have taken any number of deer and half a dozen buffalo. One shot kills all.
Remington 405 gr softpoint with smokeless at a bit over 1800 feet per second, or 420 grain cast at a bit over 1500 feet per second with black powder sub.

I asked for "hot" loading info, because I'm not interested in any trapdoor loads. ALL of my loading books are 30+ years old, my books predate the introduction of the Ruger #1. I was hoping for some suggestions using some of the newer powders on the market. I was hoping that someone would share some favorite loads to give me a place to start from.

Nearly all the loading I have done in the last 15 years has been for the Sharps and those were BP or duplex loads for hunting.

I still don't understand your question???

You start off by saying:
Let me start by telling you, the rifle is a Ruger #1 in 458 Win Mag

Then you continue on asking for 'Hot 45-70 loads??

Which is it?
.458 WinMag, or 45-70????

They are Not the same thing, and load data is not interchangeable!!!

So, which caliber are you wanting load data for???

Sounded to me like he wanted some "hot" .45-70 power level loads for his .458 Win Mag rifle, which is how I answered, but I could be wrong, as I often am.

Well, that's what I thought at first too, and that's how I answered him too.

But he keeps coming back full circle to 'don't want no Steenk'n Trap-door 45-70 loads?

So I'm confused, as usual, as well.

Either he wants low-end .458 WinMag loads?
Or he wants high-end 45-70 loads.

But which is it he wants??

rc

Emmmm?

You can't do that!!

.458 WinMag is a rimless belted round.

45-70 is a rimmed cartridge with a smaller body, and larger rim.

I'd just toss the #1 and get a Shiloh in 45-70 to go along with the 45-90, grab a few pounds of Holy Black and make 'em as hot as I wanted. Man, that's fun! MeHavey taught me how to load my Sharps and I do love it.
