Whats best to shave lead ring off

Howdy Everyone !
I now have the new .456 bullet mold for the 58 remmie. A memeber said not to forget to shave a lead ring off the bullet. The bullets are 220 grain conicals and seat a good distance below top of the cylinder with a 25 grain load. My question is what is the best way to shave a ring off of a bullet or several bullets at a time. Sounds like I might be spending some time with a rasp or large file.

The lead ring gets shaved off when you load the bullet into the cylinder chamber. Unless there are different loading instructions for some reason, which I don't know why, it will be shaved during loading.

If you are not kidding us, the answer you got is the right answer. The ball/bullet should/must be bigger than the chamber.

Your 456 mould/bullet is larger than any modern repro's chambers. If your chambers have been chamfered, it is possible you will not see a "shaved" ring, it will swage and seal.If it is not chamfered, and you do not get a "shaved" ring of lead from seating the ball/bullet, I would heartily reccommend you either use a greased wad under the ball or a slather of grease over it to at least hinder what is called a "chain fire".
Hell, if the ball is under chamber size, whether greased or not, it will most likely come out of the chamber far enough to lock up the revolver.

Jim, the shaving they're referring to is the lead ring that gets shaved off when you load them in the chamber. That's how they form a tight fit to the chamber. Take some out shooting. If they shave a thin ring when you load them, you've got the right size. Enjoy.

What dwave (and the others) says. A right sized ball, when pushed down the cylinder, will leave a perfect ring o' lead. Now, if you're cheap, you keep a pan and scrape the rings into the pan. After a couple o' thousands o' rings, you might have enough for a fresh ball.

OK I misunderstood the comment about shaving the last ring off.

I guess I missunderstood that comment. I at first thought the comment meant shaving off the last ring to shorten the bullet length !! I now realize it meant shaving the circumference of the ring which happens naturally if the bullet is the right size in the first place. I have shot two dozen rounds and all have worked perfectly, just a matter of resighting the the weapon.
