What's important to you in a holster ?

I want it to cover the trigger. Not is a non starter for me.
I want it to be molded tight enough so the gun doesn't come out when it's turned upside down.
IMO, 7oz is the minimum weight leather that should be used. 8 or 9 is better, as is shoulder cuts.
I'm ambivalent about retention straps. If they're used they should have a provision for stowing the strap in an "off" position.

I'd have to say I prefer 6-7oz (if it's high quality, firm temper leather) for IWB, and 8-9 for OWB for full-size guns.

One thing I try to do is 'scale up' and 'scale down' the leather weight along with the use of the holster, the size of the gun and the design requirements. I think it's a bit counterproductive to make an IWB for a very small gun from 9oz, and poor design to use 6-7oz for an OWB for a really large gun. The best holsters I've seen take leather weight into consideration that way.

What I've learned so far is different folks want mostly different features.
The single most important common feature mentioned is a sweat shield.
I'm not a fan of them as I mentioned in post #2. If you've got to have them they should be short. Note when Ed Head of Gunsite gets on his thumb safety in this GunTalkTV video on the 1911. See at about the :40 mark.

You can't do that with a tall sweat shield.
