What's the best Lowest Price HD Shotgun?

I happen to like mossbergs, in part because of the location of the action release. Check your local walmart of other big box store and they can be had in maverick for under 200 bucks or mossburg for under 300 bucks. Both old reliable models from a trusted manufacturer. Made in the USA, although Maverick has some Mexican parts.

there is much to be said for 20 gauge youth models, especially if other family members are going to share.

I think buying chinese guns is about as patriotic as voting for obama or feinstein.

I just showed my friend how to clean his 870... it wasn't obvious how to pull out the ejector spring, which looked riveted in place
Words fail me.

I'll bite... NEF Pardner

I'm on me second one and they are great guns manufactured by the Freedom Group (Remington, Bushmaster etc parent company)

Unless something significant has changed lately, the NEF Pardner Pump is "manufactured" by Norinco in China and imported/marketed under the New England Firearms marque. I believe that the parts are imported and the guns are assembled/finished here.

I'll add another vote for the Maverick 88. I've had mine for 5+ years and have never had reason to look for another 12 gauge pump.

Stevens 320 $200 @ Wal- Mart. 18.5" cylinder bore barrel, full length fixed stock with pistol grip. Only thing I don't like is the tube only holds 4 rds. But it will accept tube extentions. Nice 12 ga for the price.

Sit down with your friend and watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhgwHQCJwWw . It's only about 3 minutes of video, but it conveys a lot in a very short time. It's a preview of a full length video, and a good one, but there's still a lot of 'meat' in that three minutes.

Obviously any reliable shotgun will do for HD, IF the shooter will do. Focus on THE SHOOTER.

I find it pretty funny that we, collectively as firearms enthusiasts, on one hand shun the idiocy of something like an AWB because it focuses on cosmetic features and accessories and has nothing to do with the functionality/lethality of the firearm....

...yet so many firearms folks are convinced they need all kinds of tacti-cool accessories to be effective in their shooting, almost regardless of in which discipline (sporting to HD).

What seems to have been lost in the last 20 years or so is the basic value of honing the skills of the shooter in favor of focusing on the details of the tool.

I own 2 tactical shotguns. They fit my tactical needs. One is a Mosberg pump, don't have the model in my head. It sits in my bedroom closet in Realtree camo and I retired it as my turkey gun. The other is an old 12 g Winchester single shot with a hammer that sits in my entry hall closet. It is a 16g hand-me-down and I will retire it when I use up the 25 year old box of shells. I shoot it about every two years or so. They are tactical because they fit my tactics of purely backup weapons.

If you can't find a magazine extension for a stevens they do make a 7 shot magazine tube and spring. Parts are usually reasonable for savage products.

I've seen Winchester SXP combo set for around $300. This is a 28" VR bbl with three chokes plus an 18-20" defender bbl with cyl bore for HD. Just a thought if you want one shotgun for most applications.

Among my collection of firearms, I have an old Stevens single shot side lever break action 20ga. which my brother shortened for HD. I have never shot it but it locks up tight and is simple to operated.

I think Mossberg offers this similar type set up on a couple of their 500 models.

My tactical home defense shotgun looks exactly like this one. The only modifications I've made are some character marks inadvertently added to the wood...

Without the second barrel you can probably find one used in the $150 to $175 range.

Hi all,

thanks for all the info. Looks like the thread took off over the week! I had thought baout scrounging around the pawn shops but really haven't much. Will take a look around a bit next week and see if I can find something to cut the price off of new.

Will check out the suggestions with him and see where he wants to go from here.

Buds has a combo with the 4 +1 and 7+1 magazine tubes including the 18.5 barrel and 28" barrel for $240. They are not stocking the 7+1 alone. http://www.ebay.com/itm/TACTICAL-XE...6331399?pt=US_Flashlights&hash=item3a4b97a087

I have a maverick 88 that has a 9 shot magazine tube and a 20" barrel. It is a bruiser! There is nothing wrong with a stevens shotgun either. I borrow a friends stevens shotgun when I visit. Not many bunnies or woodcock get away from me. The only problem I have with a stevens is I reload as I shoot. The bottom ejection gives me a scare every now and then.
