between a 870 12 gauge special purpose and a 870 12 gauge express model with a slug barrel?

Not quite enough info in the query to be sure, but here's what I THINK you're asking about...
870 slug barrels these days are often rifled full length. This makes them quite accurate with slugs, but good for nothing else.
Some 870 slug barrels are smoothbore, with or without choke tubes.
Most other barrels made now are smoothbore.

well,i saw an ad for a special purpose and looked at the gun,it looked almost exactly like an express mag model but was about 70 bucks more.the only dif i saw was the synthetic stocks....is some other difference?basically why is it called special purpose ?

I think the difference is Camo Paint, Rem Choke Tubes and 20" bll on the SP, as opposed to Black Synthetic, Cylider bore, and 18" bbl. on the 870 Black Synthetic. Sight may be diff too? Looks like the SP may come with a sling also?
