What's the oddest thing you've heard someone say in regards to firearms, ammunition, etc.?

With so many people buying up firearms and ammunition like it's 2012 again, I got to thinking about just how many people there are that are buying/own ammunition/firearms that they know little or NOTHING about. For example, one time I was at my local gun shop and overheard this guy tell his buddy (with the utmost sincerity), "Naw man, 9mm Luger is way more powerful than 9 x 19 Parabellum." I waited around to hear a snicker or some indication that he was just messing with his friend, but began to realize that this guy really believed this.

What's some of the crazy, misinformed BS have you guys heard from people regarding firearms, ammunition, hunting, shooting, etc.?

Not misinformed BS, but a funny thing I heard a few weeks back at the local gun shop.

I was looking at something there when an older lady with a British accent walked in and told the owners wife "I'd like to buy a six shooter".
She started showing her what they had in stock and the lady asked to see the Wrangler.
She got it out and let her look it over. At one point she pulled back the hammer, pulled the trigger while asking if the gun was loaded.
The owners wife said "If it was, you would have just shot your foot".
I had to walk out the door!

A self-proclaimed gun enthusiast, who has spent scads "accessorizing" his M&P Sport, tell his wife that "No, AR doesn't mean 'Automatic Rifle', it means 'assault rifle'".

Pretty much half of anything said in a caliber debate.

In a gun store once and overheard this two way gem.

    Customer: “9mm can’t kill anything.”
Store owner: “Yeah right. The 9mm has killed more people than cancer”.

Or the family friend, and old timer...refused to squirrel hunt with me if I took a .22. Cause you can never tell where those things are going.

Friend of mine couldn't find any ammo for his M&P40c, so I said I would load him up some out of my stash. Asked him how many and what type of bullet. Offered to make some HP defense loads and he said he just wanted target ammo because the sound of the gun going off would scare the bad guy away, anyways...

And I believe someone on this forum stated that the high-recoil of .40 S&W was more likely to injure the shooter rather than the bad guy you were shooting at.

I met an incredibly knowledgeable man, made guns, tanned leather, worked his own wood. Up on politics, very smart in general, and down to earth. One day, he told me dead serious cooking spray could make bullets armor piercing. I:eek: I guess sensational '90's BS media gets to even the best of us.

Cannot think of too many at the top of my head, but here's a few

"A .22 LR can take down a elk with good enough aim"

"44 magnum taking down deer? Are deer just like, nimble these days?"

"THIS, is a Ghost gun; it is capable of firing a 30 caliber magazine clip in under a second"

Years ago my I was watching some military movie with my brother in law.
BIL "You know if you open up the side plate of an AK - 47 there's a screw in there you can turn that makes it fully automatic.
    Me "That's not true"
    BIL - "Yes it is"
    Me "Who told you that"
BIL "My friend Rick in Virginia"
Me "The same Rick that sold you that cheap AK with the pitted barrel and cracked stock for $1000 and told you it was a Viet Nam war trophy"?

5.56 bullets tumble when they hit the enemy so he is only wounded. Three are stopped because of the wounded man and two others to get him to the hospital. You can use 223 in the same gun to hunt with, those will kill instead of wound. Said in a gun shop by employee to a customer looking at an AR last week.

I had a guy recently repeat to me the same tired "a 50 Cal (note if someone calls the BMG "the 50 cal" and they're not speaking from experience, i usually just stop listening there) can kill a ...blah blah blah... without even hitting it 'cause of the shockwave". While I would not call this guy well informed, he was constantly using his phone to fact check, so a little taken back. When I told him this was straight made up, he tried to convince me he's right by explaining he heard it from a guy who saw it. I told him the laws of physics still apply, and he just stood there trying to figure out was stupid, him or me. I never heard back, and I know the guy could never resist the urge to go look it up.

I have heard some of the weirdest and dumbest things at gun shows by “knowledgeable” guys that are attending the shows with their (I assume) inexperienced friends. I heard these at the last couple of gun shows I attended.

“You don’t want a Glock. They melt in sustained fire.”

“The 1911 is the best all around firearm design in the world. You can do anything with it.”

“You said this revolver is a Double Action! How come I can pull the hammer back like one of those old single action guns?”

Recently at a couple of gun stores I heard these gems. I assume these folks were newbies buying guns because of CoVid panic.

“I want the sound of a pump shotgun but I want a handgun for ease of carry. Is there an app that I can play that sounds like a pump shotgun? I would rather scare someone breaking into my home rather than shoot them. Maybe they’ll run away at the shotgun sound.”
Much to the sales clerk’s credit he recommended the guy take a safety course put on by a local range before buying anything. Unfortunately all the local indoor ranges closed a week later.

Exchange I heard the other day:
“I need to buy a gun”
“What type of gun are you looking for?”
“I don’t know, but it has to be cheap, reliable and shoot several kinds of ammunition.”
“What do you want the gun for?”
“I need something in case the world falls apart and I need to bugout. I need a gun that will shoot any ammo I scrounge up in case things get all ‘Walking Dead’ on us...I only have two-hundred dollars...”
I looked at the clerk. He looked at me. I rolled my eyes and mouthed “Good Luck” then I left.

Coworker: The 5.56 bullet tumbles through the air on the way to the target.
Me: No it doesn't. If it did, it would be totally inaccurate. It only tumbles on impact, not during flight.
Coworker: No, it tumbles in flight, that's what the barrel rifling is for.
Me: No, barrel rifling twists the bullet to make it spiral like a football.
Coworker: No, it tumbles in the air. I was in the Army during Vietnam and that is what we were trained.
    Me: o_O :uhoh:

Just because you were in the Army doesn't mean you know everything about guns. However, it does mean you know how to iron your shirt every weekend before inspection.

I've also heard about 5.56 tumbling through the air.

I've been told that the reason (older) Glocks point high for me is because I'm standing upright like a cavalryman rather than adopting a proper tactical squat.

A few years back I was talking with a buddy at his gun store ...this goofy looking kid rushes in all breathless and interrupts the old man to ask him what the biggest gun he had was, saying "My friend's got a 45 and I need something bigger."

The owner pointed to the door and said, "Hit the parking lot and look in back of the Jeep, you can't miss it."

    "What's it called?"

"It has several names but most just call it cannon."

    "The parking lot?

"Because it comes on wheels ...let me know if you want me to write that up."
