The title says THE most popular handgun so I voted S&W revolver because I feel it is the most popular handgun but my most favorite is the 1911. I'd be curious to know which has sold more over the years, all S&W revolvers versus all 1911s?

I believe the OP wanted people to select their own most popular handgun.

Regarding the production volume, I would be interested too. I would guess the S&W revolvers had a lot more volume. The current explosion in 1911's has only been going on for a decade or so. Previous to that there wasn't too many people making them other than Colt. And over the years there were a lot of former military guns on the market.

A quick search suggests that S&W made over 6 million M&P (Model 10) revolvers, and were exported all over the world.
They made a lot of Model 19's as well.

I find it hard to believe that there are more than 6 million 1911's out there. I believe we were the only major military to adopt it. While it saw some use in Argentina and Brazil I don't believe it ever made a lot of headway in the police market.

Shot for shot, I would have to say a Ruger semi-auto 22 pistol which I have several. I enjoy shooting a DA revolver more, but seldom actually shoot as many rounds.

I have more carry time with the Ruger SP101 than anything else, and sometimes carry more than one at a time. I have said plenty of times that if I could have only one handgun, it would be a Ruger GP100. So, according to the OP's guidelines, "Ruger DA revolver" is the best answer.

Has it come to this, really?

The fact that we have to remind people that Colt used to make some of the best double action revolvers on the market? I can't even vote because of it. Well if I could it would be the medium frame 38/357 Colt double actions of yesteryear that I own too many to even count.

they made 6 million 1911's for the 2 world wars, bud

Not even close.

We didn't even make 6 million M1 Garands durring WWII.
Where are you getting your numbers from?

Regarding Glock, last time I checked their total production for all models wasn't close to 6 million.
Regarding the M10, I wasn't saying it was the most common pistol in the world. I was repsonding to Larry's post wondering if there had been more S&W revolvers sold than 1911's. I gave that number on just one Model to give perspective.

To the best of my knowledge the most common pistol in the world is the Browning Hi Power and it's clones at 11+ million.

I wouldn't be surpirsed to learn that total S&W revolver production trumps that.

I have most on the list but the one I shoot the most is my Ruger .22. It goes to the range and gets shot pretty much every time I go no matter what else I might be shooting that day.
