Hi everyone, I just joined a gun club and went to the first meeting. It was an interesting experience. Invariably any disscusion went off topic in about 5 minutes. It seems that most of the work is done by a few of the people but everybody has a gripe.

We are improving the range by building a firing line cover. I think the hardest part of it is getting a design that satisfies 100 people who complain and think that that is enough of a contribution on their part. I'm new and don't want to make any waves at least at first so I signed up for the building team and kept my mouth shut.

I felt an under current of politics in how the officers dealt with some of the topics and each other. How common is that? It's a small club what is there to get worked up about?

The club runs pistol shoots on the weekends. Do you think there would be a market for ones during the week in the daytime? It could be called a retiree's match or something.

What can I do to make my new membership more enjoyable all around?

Any good stories from your club?

I've got to say that I love mine. We have a group of officers who go out of their way to put on great matches, and a core membership that is always willing to pitch in and help out. I can't imagine a much better club that the one that I'm currently in.

I've a member for a year. I don't think they do matches...of any sort. It's very laid back and fairly low useage. When I go I'm by myself mostly. There is a monthly meeting and once a year they do a "wild game dinner" as a meet and greet. Like you said, most of the work is done by a core group but I don't know about the politics part here. Seems like they get along good.I'm glad you found a club. Stic with it and help...thats how things improve.

our club is very laid back, and unless its the weekend before shotgun season the range is almost always empty. to help share the work its part of your membership to donate 4 hours a year, or pay an extra 25 bucks. most people do the work and it helps. everyone's nice, no one really goes to the monthly meetings, but all in all its a good place

Clubs are nice, I think you will find a very small number of the members attend meetings, a smaller amount of them are willing to accept the PIB that
goes with being an active officer. My thoughts are get involved and give of yourself to assist them! I think you will find any club more enjoyable if you do!

you've discovered the underlying behind what gunclubs ARE. yes it's political, there's no such thing as a non-political club (short of a privately owned unit with an owner that states directly "my land, my range, my decisions and my rules").
my club suffers from this, and from several other problems linked to this that i won't go into, and at least one of them could threaten the club's future survival.

get involved, i would if i could but right now i barely have time to spare to get out to the range to begin with, much less to devote the time and energy i beleive should be put forth by those taking positions of responsibility

btw of those of you who are involved enough in your clubs to know the composition of the board of Directors..... do YOU think it's a fair situation when a group that represents less than 30% of actual range use gets a double vote on the board?
