What's Your Deer Rifle?

If I could only have one it would be a 30/06. You can buy 110 Savages used fairly cheap. I was on a budget some years ago and bought a used 110E in 270. It has been very reliable.

Remington Mountain Rifle

.280 remington. Easy to carry. Accurate and good enough for almost any kind of deer I'll be hunting.
Pretty rifle too.

I shoot a Ruger #1 that I had chambered for the 7mm STW. That's the one I hunt with most of the time if I happen to use a rifle. I mostly bow hunt these days. I have a few other (Deer) rifles plus a 257 Weatherby that I use to varmint hunt with.

What do I think?

I'm thinking that if all those other rifles were so cool and loved by the people that shoot them, they would have a thread like this- (52 pages and growing)

Hey, I like the 336 as well as the next guy ... but it's not available in .270 and I wouldn't want to try a shot at 350 yards, even with LeveRevolution ammo.

Remington 7600 in 30-06.
I have had mine since I was 12 or 13.
three pages of hits for them on gun broker right now, priced between 460 and 750. The 750 is for some kind of commemertive rifle.

My rifle is a 1917 Enfield in 30-06 that was sported out before I bought it. I like Savage rifles and I don't think you would go wrong with a Savage.

110 Savage

I was tight for cash about 10 years ago and bought a used 110E Savage in 270. It has been a great reliable no frills gun. On the other end the deer don't care how much the gun cost me .

If I were going to have only 1 gun (god forbid!) I would go with a 30/06.

Win m70 featherweight '06 beutiful, light, but also very spendy.

Or my Ruger m77 rs tang safety .243.

I just bought a savage 308. I am kinda partial to savage because they are one step closer to lego's for a gun. Grab a wrench and a head space gage and TA DA! You have a new chambering. Get one with/without accutrigger, with or without wood... doesn't matter, switch them out or buy a custom trigger and drop it in yourself. You can replace everything, yourself, except the receiver.

My favorite deer rifle is my Rem 700. However I often find myself far afield with an Arisaka or Mossin Nagant 44, adds to the challenge.

Ditto on the Remington 700 can't go wrong. I prefer .308 but .270 is also great round for the distances you want. A buddy of mine bought a Savage I think from here in .270 w/ scope for $300. Either way best of luck and good hunting.

You surely won't go wrong with a .270, I've seen everything from groundhogs to caribou dropped cleanly with that cartridge.

An awful lot depends on where and what methods you employ as to what rifle you ought to obtain.....My advice is to handle several makes and models and chose the one that feels best to YOU. I have a real soft spot for my ancient (1940's) M/70 Winchester in '06, but my real "usin'" rifle is a snappy handling lightweight Browning BAR with a 20" tube!....Course I dog hunt deer and require a quick handling gun.....Your approach is likely different so choose accordingly.

Mine is now a Remington 788 .243. I cant wait till next season so I can actually hunt with it.

When I used to use rifles for deer, I used:

Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in .270 Winchester
Remington Model 700 Mountain Rifle in 7X57mm Mauser
Winchester Model 94 in 30/30 Winchester

Since 1991 I've done all my deer hunting with a stick and string.

Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage. Have also used a Remington 700 in .308 and a Remington 600 in .243. All of them killed the deer quite dead, but the Savage does it with more style and panache.

Don't worry about the caliber as much as how well the rifle feels in your hand and shoulders. The rest will take care of itself. I settled on an old marlin .30-30 that fits me like a glove. I've taken many whitetails with it and several hogs. It's an honest to goodness deer rifle. With good shot placement you can make kills out to about 150 yds. Some say witht the new Hornandy ammo you can stretch the range out to 200 yds. or a little further.
