When it is an AMT Backup of course. Just field strip, change tops, change mags of course, and you are set to go in a new caliber.

I just wanted an excuse to post a pic of my biggest pocket pistol setup in all the four calibers mentioned above.

What do you guys think?

they still in business?

believe EAA can do it and more. 45acp,10mm,40S&W,38super,9mm,22lr
probably find caliber conversions for 357sig and other calibers.

Thanks for the comments. AMT is out of business (unfortunately). The only advantage to that is that parts are relative inexpensive right now. Many parts are still available from parts houses, including complete 9mm tops and 357sig barrels(Numrich, etc.) I had heard a lot of stories about reliability on the AMT. I found that the design is very simple robust and sound. The problem seems to be mostly little things easily taken care of. After polishing the feed ramp and adjusting the feed lips on new factory original mags, the little AMT Backup is 100% reliable with the 40s&w in all rounds tested except ARSCORP stuff from the Philipines. After 3 or 4 hammer strikes this ARMSCORP stuff will still not fire, so I think it is definitely hard primers and not a gun issue. I think a majority of reliability issues were mag related and are easily fixed. The factory just did not take time to adjust the mag lips properly as nearly every factory mag I bought was a jammo-matic until it was adjusted. I have not had the other tops long enough to test them yet, other than just preliminary fit and function, and I don't even have mags for the 45 yet. This package gives a real versatile package for major calibers in an extremely small package that can be carried as a primary weapon or switched to a true backup roll behind a full size gun in any one of the calibers mentioned. I could also shoot 38super, but I cannot find a top and it offers nothing over the calibers I already have. I am in the market for a 400 Corbon barrel. I just missed one on ebay a couple months ago.

I am really interested in the EAA. I was not aware that their top half would interchange. Thanks. I have a jones for interchangeable barrel guns (Contender, Dan Wesson, AMT, Mossberg 500 and S&W 22s)

not all EAA slides interchange they got kits though to do bout anything. if you get one you want to choose 10mm or 45acp they are the strongest. then you could easily go to anything else without worries.

Had a .45 backup when they first came out. For the first 100 rounds I had the perfect carry piece, then it broke in. The reliability was flawless, with ball and all JHPs available, but that damn thing wanted to tear the tip of my trigger finger off. Most folks, regardless of testosterone level, could not make it through a single magazine. Lucky for me it was still new and popular, and I sold it 10 minutes after I put it on the shelf. Ouch.

NMshooter, I had another friend tell me the same thing about the AMT Backup in 45acp. He was shooting with a buddy who was a DEA agent and who carried the AMT in 45 as a deep concealment undercover gun. My friend said when he fired his buddies gun it bit his hand something fierce. I have not fired the 45 barrel due to lack of mags at the moment, but I have had no such problems with the 40s&w. I was expecting the worst due to my friends story, but I was pleasantly surprised. I am not sure what the difference is, but if the 45 causes me that kind of pain it will obviously see limited action. As for now, the Backup in 40 is my goto gun for for times when I feel the need for more than my NAA Guardian in 32acp. That is another thing I like about being able to shoot all those calibers from the same gun. It allows me to evaluate recoil and accuracy between the different calibers on an identical platform.

My 45acp carry gun may remain my Llama MiniMax, another often maligned gun that has been 100% reliable for me even when I intentionally tried to fire it as fast as I could to see if I could make it hiccup. No boblbes, the little 3.5" beauty just eats up everything I run through it.

Best regards,
