When Does The Assault Weapon Ban Get Introduced?

I'm with Jorg on this one. The previous AWB didn't do the Dems any favors and I doubt they will want to tackle it now with the Presidential election 2 years away. They will attempt to play to the issues that won them this election to build upon success. If they don't they will just lose everything they've gained and maybe more in the next election.

If the Dems are smart they will wait until they win the '08 election before they even Talk about an AWB. If they aren't smart, they will either try and pass a harsh AWB like Brady II or a watered-down one that they hope they can get through the Senate. With the amount of conservative Dems that got elected, I doubt that it will be easy to push an AWB.

If they fail to pass one by the end of 2007 I don't think that they will try until after 2008. The last thing that they want is to go into such an important election with a divisive piece of legislation on the table.

Put down the NRA kool-aid and slowly back away. Despite the fear mongering, Democrats didn't win yesterday because they said they were gonna take away your guns. They did however, lose in the past because of it, and they remember. Whether or not a new push happens for federal anti-gun measures will remain to be seen. Many of the new Democrats who won ran as pro-gun candidates, which is encouraging. Whether or not they will stay with that platform, who knows. It's possible but this whole "end is nigh" ranting is misplaced in my opinion.

What's the platform of the House leadership, namely Pelosi, Conyers, Waxman? What's the platform of the likely Senate leadership of Schumer,

The "the Dems remember 1994 and don't want your guns" is as much koolaid as anything else, especially since they've repeatedly introduced gun control measures every year since 1994.

I don't see the Dems accomplishing dick.

Winning this election was the worst thing that could happen to them. Of course, being howler monkeys, they don't realize that, or aren't bright enough to think ahead to 08 and 2010.

This will be the lamest lame duck CONGRESS in history.

Again I don't believe it will come as an outright proposal but rather in the aftermath of some action by the enemy.Theres no doubt that both partys will politicise catastophy and one only needs to look at the leadership of the Democrats to see the radical bend.

I would say one won't be introduced unless Rudy Guillani gets elected to the presidency in 2008. There seems to be alot of fear mongering and I believe the Democrats learnt their lessons in 1994 that if you want to win stuff let them keep their firearms. Its not like there do much good if they started rolling tanks up the street.

The Dems only hope is to focus on Spending, Taxes, and the War in Iraq. That way they can keep the people happy and show them "hey look, we won't F&*$-up too badly if you vote for us in '08!"

The key failings of the Democratic Party on the national stage in the past 6 years has been their lack of leadership. When they start spewing their wack-o leftist ideas they lose elections (Gore); and when they try and keep them hidden and just play the field they lose elections (Kerry). Lets face it, Bush never was that strong of a candidate, but he still managed to sneak past Gore. In 2004 Bush practically handed the Dems a winning campaign, but they put up Kerry (who was mediocre at best) and he still couldn't beat Bush. It has taken 6 years of the Republican Party making a mess of things for the American people to trust the Dems back in office after 1994.

This isn't "Thank God The Dems Are Back In Power", it's "We'll Give You Another Chance, But We're Watching You."

In their heart of hearts, all of the above would like to ban guns nation-wide (world-wide even more fun) except for their personal body guards (being too precious themselves to sully their hands with something like a *sniff* gun) . . .

But the question I see is do they think they'll get a political boost out of the idea, or will it cost them? They're still stinging from being all but run out of power entirely for the last six years or so and I suspect they'll talk a big game but tread very lightly for fear that their party platform of "Bush-is-bad-mmmmkay?" and "we've got a super secret plan to fix Iraq, but you have to elect us first" won't float nearly as far as they hope. Particularly when their majorities are paper thin and a lot of those Congressmen are answering to red-state constituencies even if it says "(D)" after their name.

Personally, I'm not panicking until Hillary makes it back into the White House. At which point, all bets are off, and I may have to look into a more gun friendly nation like, say, Canada. :barf: (Hillary, not Canada) :)

No, I dont beleive the Democrats are that stupid. They had a much stronger hold on both houses and the presidency in 93, and there was enormous positive buzz about gun control in the media and in the popular consciousness. Brady and his wheelchair were like a rockstar in a stretched countach- they literally couldnt get enough good press.

Things are very different now. Dems have a weak hold on power. They have 10 years of defeat to remind them of what happens when you try to ban guns. The bradies and the million mommies are in dire financial straights from lack of support and the media is generally trending more pro gun. We had an enormous spate of school shootings a few months back and no a single media outlet blamed the guns. The NRA has been making big strides at the state and federal level. Evidence of its influence is obvious for anyone to see.

I predict no AWB is even attempted. If one is attempted, I predict the dems suffer for it.

You all worry too much. I honestly don't think the Dems will do much of anything gun related at all.

Just in case, I just started buying Lowers, though.
