When should I consider rebuilding my XD-45

At what point should I consider rebuilding my XD-45. So far it is still 100% original stock with about 150 rounds fired thru it. I shoot 240 Gr. FMJ and have 185 Gr. SJHP for the night stand so far never fired any of those.
I've heard I should consider the barrel at 1500 rounds and the slide rod and springs around 1000 rounds. I'm considering getting a stainless slide rod in a couple months and new springs at the same time. I shoot aropund 500 rounds per year in each of my 2 semi's and about 3 times more out of the revolvers for now.
I just got an old S&W 669 in pristine condition that had only 16 rounds fired thru it in its lifetime. So it will last a while yet too.
Does anybody make a stainless slide rod for the 669?

Opinions as well as experience are welcome here.

You are thinking way out of the box here. Barrels last a long time. I have a Combat Commander and Taurus 9mm that have well over 20K rounds with the original barrel. shoot lead bullets and the barrel should last forever. The Combat Commander has had some small parts replaced (sear, recoil spring guide, recoil spring, etc) but is still chugging along on it's original slide and barrel. The Taurus has has only the rear sight leaf replaced.

A S&W 6906 (same family) needs a new recoil spring after about 3000 rds. I have a 469 with at least 10K rds through it and the only thing that has been replaced is the recoil spring (a couple of times).

Quality firearms do not need constant replacing of major parts to work.

Revolvers develop timing problems usually. Shoot a lot of magnums in that J frame and you'll need work on it much faster than that Ruger or L frame you shoot 38s in most of the time. The Ruger or L frame will probably outlast you if you shoot mostly 38s.

These are my observations but I've only been shooting for over 40 years and still have a lot to learn.

My XD-40 SC has thousands of rounds through it with no replacement of anything yet. XD's are built very similarly to Glocks, which go for 10's of thousands of rounds with little to no replacement of parts.

Who the heck have you been talking to?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you will never in your whole lifetime shoot out a barrel. Particularly for the kind of pistol you are talking about, as long as it feeds reliably and will hold 2-3" at 25 yards, it's FINE. I would buy a set of Wolff springs, have them installed at about 5-10,000 rounds and probably never worry about them again.

Worry about rebuilding when it won't shoot on the paper, the feed lips of the magazines are worn off, and it won't lock open on empty anymore. (In your case, probably never.)

I was thinking the same thing.....you're getting some serious mis-information. Other than things you WANT to do (after market grips, springs, sights, etc.) there is nothing you should HAVE to do to a brand new XD for (idealy) years unless something breaks prematurely or you totally abuse it. Keep it clean, inspected and you should be fine for some time.

By the way, I haven't heard about the ol' 669 in some time. GREAT SIDEARM....I used to own one too. Rock solid reliability.

My XD-.45 is pushing 5,000 rounds of full power loads and still has never failed to feed, fire or eject a round. Whoever is telling you these things is way off base. My 357 Sig XD has over 10,000 rounds through it and I've never replaced a thing, other than buying more magazines so I don't have to load them so often.

Hope this helps.

My son's XD service has many thousands of 230 FMJ through it and he bought it used.

Zero problems of any kind. He shoots 500 rds through the XD (sometimes much more) every month.

More often than not he wins the trophy for limited 10 in our USPSA league shoot using the XD.

It takes a lick'n and keeps on tick'n.

Thanks for all of the positive comments.
I guess I did well choosing the XD.
The reason I bought it was more than anything else -it fit my big hand and shot where I was wanting it to right on draw.
I'll let you all know if i ever shoot it out.

I think it's a good idea to replace the recoil spring every year, but I agree, your barrel has many years left.

If you're shooting a .22-250 rifle, 1,500 might be right, but the .45acp is pretty easy on guns.

The problem is that 240gr FMJ ammo you're using, it'll wear those XD's out in short order!

There is a guy posting on a few boards who shot over 60,000 rounds through and M&P. I have probably around 5000 rounds through my M&P. I can't see any discernible wear in it. I see no reason the XD shouldn't be equally as tough. I wouldn't worry about replacing any parts due to wear.

my xd barrel has 17,000rds through it, you are good. at 1500rds the barrel isn't even broke in yet. did the person that told you to change the barrel every 1500rds have a box full of barrels he wanted to sell?:) you do not need to change out a handgun barrel that often. i could see it now, showing up to a 5 day pistol course, and having to change out the barrel on the firing line on day 3.

i put in a don's guide rod and wolff spring, i change them out every 3,000rds or when it is needed depending if i am shooting hot reloads and or duty/ defense ammo. i also suggest that you change out the striker spring too, it dosen't have to be at 3,000rds, mine has lasted as long as 8,000rds + but 5-6 k is a good interval to change, and when you do just spray out the inside of the striker channel.
