Where did the SKS's go?

I picked up 2 of them last month. A yugo for 125 and a chinese model D for 150 I think it was. I am also in hot pusuit of another at this time. they are there, just keep looking. I am not into the PVC thing but a nice vacuum sealed bag works well;)

I feel like an idiot, about a 2 and a half years ago I bought a SKS with all matching numbers at a sporting goods store in oregon for $120. Less than a year ago I hocked it at a gun show for $90, and then I went and bought a used 10/22 for $100.

Geneseo1911: "Wish I had a time machine. Of course if I had a time machine, I'd be bringing back Thompson SMGs from the thirties, not SKSs. Of course, I'd have to stop by 1986 and register them on the way back. What a pain."

Yeah, when I stopped over in 1986 around this time of year I overshot my parameters and wound up in the middle of a Ukrainian power plant. I think I flipped the wrong switch or something.

sks

Very utilitarian rifle, imho. Likely the most prolific one as well.

Tune the trigger, tighten the stock fit, use a sling, and practice a lot.

Gallows:

That is nice, but whatever money you Canadian guys save on the Russian SKS etc, you have already spent (and more) on taxes, as with so many Belgians, Germans, Nederlanders etc: i.e. for socialized medicine, govt. pension plans.
Wish I could visit your cities more often, and they are much safer to walk around than US cities.

We get 'around'. Happy shooting, no matter how it happens.

FWIW, I just saw a Yugo covered in cosmoline, sitting on the rack at a local gun store with a $499.00 price tag on it

If I thought for one minute I could get that for the two (Yugo's) I've got, they'd be gone. I took one out and shot it once...couple of boxes of ammo. The other one I've never fired.

I've got two, Norinco, bought them new in the early nineties, One "Model D" configured w/ detachable AK47 mag etc, the other is longer, has the folding triangular bayonet and stripper configuration.

IIRC, I paid $200 or less for each of them.

I saw one in a pawn shop yesterday that they called a "paratrooper", it was Norinco BUT short, with a short folding "triangular" bayonet and 10-round stripper mag... tagged at $429. I've never seen one configured like that before... is it likely the "shortened-for-commercial-purposes-export-only" version described here? Is that price anywhere close to reasonable?

Buddy of mine bought a Norinco with jungle stock and folder for $140 at Cablelas a few months back. I just bought an SKS-M (takes AK mags) with a Tapco T6 stock (itself worth about $80) for $285 OTD last week. The deals are still out there, just less common than before.

Do yourself a favor, grab ya a norinco. Its still the best commie carbine to date.

Isn't anyone going to talk me out of paying for $429 for a cherry Norinco Paratrooper to complete my set?

wrs840: Yes, that is-if you have lots of x39 ammo. Having just one SKS, but also a Mini 30, ammo was my priority in the months before the election.

Just one question:
Have you ever handled an authentic LE Jungle Carbine?

Got my Yugo SKS off Gunbroker for about $320, in good condition. Obviously they made a great deal on it, but I am happy I got one.

I paid one fitty for my norinco a few months back. It's in near brand new condition mechanically, but the wood is beat up here and there. I actually like it that way. Since it's already beat up a tad I wont feel bad if I mistreat it.

I wouldn't buy it myself but it's your money so you can either prove P. T. Barnum right or wrong. ;)

Seriously, the Paratrooper model has never done anything for me. I've owned about 10 SKS rifles over the years and even the standard length rifle has a relatively short sight base. I'd prefer the standard rifle without the Yugo's grenade launcher but I'd buy the Yugo before the Paratrooper.

OTOH, as a collectable, the Paratrooper will bring a higer price than most other models.

If you want a shooter, buy something else. Just my opinion, FWIW.

Didn't the Clinton Administration halt SKS importation from Russia and China via "trade agreements" and "trade sanctions"?

The SKS's that are still coming in are from much smaller countries (Yugoslavia, Romania); the big supplies were in Russia and China, and that supply is now AFAIK cut off.
