It's Way out of your way, but worth the trip, IMO. About a two hour drive.

It's the best range I know. It's not going to be a stop-in-after-work range for you, but it you are making a day of it, it's pretty doable.

Colonial Shooting Academy is really the only public one in the area that I know of, there's Dominion down in Midlothian but it's definitely not as good as Colonial.

Greentop is the shop of choice in the area as well. You can hit Dance's down in Petersburg as well, but I'd say it has less selection than Greentop.

Slight chance, but ...

Are you friends with any Henrico County cops?

When I lived & worked in the West End in the first half of the '80s they would let me and any guests that I brought shoot at their outdoor FOP range up near Greentops.

The guy that would wave me thru was a retired cop with a flowing white beard ... he was called, appropriately, Sergeant Santa. :)

I'm friends with the goochland county sheriff but not anyone in henrico... And the district judge.. but besides that, I have few friends in high places... Ive seen dominion... And its close to me... So even if its not that great, it still beats nothing I guess... And I really hate hearing greentop is the best... Because their service has been **** the last time or two I was there... Oh well.

"Because their service has been **** "

I was there this afternoon and it was just as good as it's been for the 41 years I've been shopping there. They sold more than 18,000 firearms in 2011 according to a state report I read, so they must be doing something right.

You can check with Mr. Young at Black Creek to see if they have any full or weekday memberships left. There's always been a waiting list at Cavalier. The gun club in Charlottesville is nice if you're going that way regularly.

Last time I was at green top, there was no one in the store but me, three guys behind the counter, talking to eachother.. I walked up asked to see a mossberg and one looked over his shoulder, said wait, they carried on talking for almost 20 minutes, then finally another guy came over and got the gun for me. The price tag was 200$ more than other places I saw it, and I asked if he would price match or even give a discount, and he said no, so I asked why they felt it needed to be so much more, and he said.... "You are paying for our world class service, and a limited warranty" which was stupid because at the time mossberg was offering the same warranty....
I really think greentops only good point, is location and inventory, and that there are no other shops close it seems.

"there was no one in the store but me, three guys behind the counter"

Was it 6 a.m.? They have 100+ employees total.

The last time they had only 3 employees was back in the '50s or early '60s I think. They don't keep the Mossberg shotguns, or any long guns, behind the counter, only the handguns. I handled a bunch of shotguns and a few lever action centerfires and a few .22s yesterday and they were all out where you can grab them.

Are you sure you weren't at Bass Pro a mile up the street? They keep all of the guns behind the counter. :)

I have found better service and atmosphere at Bob Moats down on Hull Street. I know, little bitty place, old, etc. but they value their customers. It is crowded but friendly.

I am positive. it was a week day, and I asked for the mossberg because they said they had several in stock when I called, but when I got there couldn't find it on the rack.

I'll definitely give bob moats a try.
