I built a range on my property, so I guess its “outdoors and I’m the RO”:







I shoot pistol, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards. I’ve been buying armor plate targets, have a swinger and a knockdown target and have enough to do some pretty decent IDPA stages.

My wife and I belong to a club with an indoor pistol range, a collection of various outdoor pistol ranges, a .22 rifle range, and a high powered rifle range. There's also an indoor archery range, a field archery course, and 3D. It's nothing fancy, but very practical and only minutes from my house. My whole family uses it.

Semi private club. {easy to join} We have about 4,000 members. Club has been there for 70yrs. It now sits in a very populated area.

Everything is outdoors with cover over the shooting position. Family oriented club with all kinds of activities for the members.
And yes, we have about 100 range officers to monitor the facilities. It's a pretty big operation.
2 full time employees and 3 or 4 part time. Many of us volunteer time to the club to do maintenence and repairs and run matches on the various ranges.
We even have a kitchen that is open on weekends.

I have been a Board Member or Officer of our local Sportsman's Club since 1981. I have been Club President around the last 20 years. We have an 800 yard Hi Power Rifle Range. We also have 2 each 100 yard ranges. A Trap Range, and a second Combination Trap & Skeet Range.

We shoot:
50 yard Rimfire Bench Rest
600 Yard Centerfire Bench Rest ( 9 Concrete Benches)
100 - 800 Yard Sniper Match shooting Silhouettes from Simulators. (30 Targets)
100 - 800 Yard Multi Range F Class (30 Targets)
Defensive Pistol Matches (Outlaw IDPA)
Steel Handgun Match
3 Gun Combat Course

Skeet

We have a very nice facility with a Club House complete with a Kitchen and 2 Rest Rooms. We also have 2 pavilions. One with 10 Picnic Tables, and a second with 8 wooden Bench Rest benches under it. You can shoot on both 100 yard ranges from this pavilion. Both are wired with receptacles and lights.
We also have a Shoot House with multiple rooms and doors, with limited lighting for night fire. We have night lighting on both Trap Ranges, and one of the 100 yard Ranges.
Our range is used for Training and Qualification by the local Police Departments, County Sheriff's Dept off and on, Drug Task Force, Conservation Agents, Highway Patrol Snipers, and Federal Prison SWAT Snipers. Law Enforcement training/qualification is scheduled during the week, and normally has almost no impact on our club members using the range.

I also have a concrete bench rest table in my back yard with a 100 yard impact berm. I have a 4' X 4' Target Frame for paper targets, and a Steel 12" X 12" hanging target for handgun practice with my hunting handguns.

Those of us who also go to a limited river area, just barely outside city limits, prefer to keep a low profile there. At least the few of us who are middle-aged do so.
It was a scene attached to a major crime (body dumped near the bridge) a few years ago, and later an illegal hombre who could not swim, was fishing over the flooding river, fell into his net and drowned.

It was rewarding in early Dec. to walk over to "the spot" and meet an agent who works for ICE, and obtain his business card. He was plinking with his Russian-built rifle against a large tree.
This same agent was required to take the fingerprints of the illegal guy who fell in about two years ago.

The only slight hang-up is in late Nov, during bowhunting season.
Some nitwit heard my Jungle Carbine, and assumed that I was poaching deer.
The two Deputies who were called were friendly, but their department (Arlington) never briefs its Deputies that the place is outside city limits, even though one of their Deputies has done some plinking there with his personal gun.

Nice stuff, wish I could win the lottery and buy enough land to build my own 1000 yard range on it! Of course, who am I kidding, I can't SEE 1000 yards, much less hit anything at that distance with anything smaller than a tac-nuke.
shooter, that is indeed the CZ-SP-01 Phantom in action, note the dust puff behind the close target - was doing some fast shots to try to catch one on camera. Please note the nifty CZ-USA skull shirt - those are very cool; my landlord wore his to Sturgis.

This range goes to 300 yards, which is about all I can handle right now. Maybe if I get a CZ 550 Urban Counter Sniper Rifle with that lottery win...

For most all of my guns when I am lazy. I have a personnal range on my property.
For the belt-fed 50 BMG, The Orange County Gun Club.
Then there is Lone Star, it's an indoor range for suppressor testing.

We have safe shooting ranges set up @ my son's land and my brother's land. I also belong to a small local conservation club that has a formal range for members only. It is generally not supervised and most of the time I can spend hours there shooting by myself.

I'm lucky enough to live in rural America where most of my shooting takes place in the pasture or at our flood control lake ( using the dam on the south side as a backstop ).

Ranges

I shoot a lot at an indoor range at the Metropolitan Rod and Gun Club in Brooklyn, NY.
I shoot Trap on Wednesdays at the Staten Island Sportsman's Club.
There is a nice uncontrolled range run by the PAF&G Commission only two miles from my home in PA.
Less frequently, I shoot at a very nice facility owned by the North Mt. Sportsman's Club in Muncey Valley...Trap, Skeet, sporting clays, rifle, pistol, and a state of the art Bunker Trap facility.

I belong to www.mcwcc.org. There are two pistol ranges (7yd and 25yd), a rifle range with targets at 50 and 100 yards, a shotgun range, an archery range, and an active youth air rifle team with an indoor range in the clubhouse.

At a recent range workday I counted 30 cars -- after some people had left and before others arrived.

Now at Johnson Creek Gun Club, members-only (2 free guests) range with 7 day a week, 8am-8pm cardlock access and no monitors beyond the security cameras and the goodwill of my fellow members.

Actually I shot a public range with 10 covered outdoor benches and 6 indoor benches. Ranges 25 yards out to 300 yards. It's part of the rod and gun club of which I'm the range officer. I'm not at the range everyday due to my work but I get over there on a fairly regular basis. This range is less that 5 miles from my house in fact I could probably walk there quicker than driving there if I wasn't carrying all the stuff I take with me to the range.

At my fathers farm a 600 YD range into a side of a large hill. 30 feet from the back door. A 30 min ride to the members only club with 100 YD outdoor range and indoor clubhouse/50 foot range for $40 a year.

Most of the time at an indoor range. It is only a mile from my house. You can rent time by the half hour , full hour, or annual tie. It is new and very clean.
In warmer weather I go to an outdoor gravel pit that is county own. No range officers and most any thing goes. Full auto to cannons.

I'm lucky enough that I live 5 minutes from a town with plenty of stores etc, and I can drive 15 minutes in the opposite direction and be in the middle of nowhere where I can shoot to my heart's content

Pistol caliber only indoor range (rimfire and PCCs allowed), hourly rate. No formal range officer, but range is monitored via CCTV.

I am jealous of 97 voters so far. I miss the days where a trip to the range was consisted of walking out of my back door, and closing it...

Things have changed here in New England:

As a boy I used to walk about a mile with a bunch of friends to shoot in the sand pits - people would call out SWAT if they saw a half dozen kids walking down the street with rifles and shotguns now.

As a high school student, I usually kept a skeet thrower, clays, shells and shotgun in my trunk to stop in an empty field, sandpit or woods to shoot or hunt whenever I wanted (season permitting of course). Its now illegal to have a gun on school property and the places open to shooting have filled with houses.

In my town and the surrounding towns it is now illegal to discharge a firearm or bow, except for the grandfathered gun clubs. I've belonged to the local club for more than a decade and shoot at their indoor and outdoor ranges.

Things change a little at a time, but a lot over a lifetime...

BTW, This is my first post here. I'm glad I found this forum, lots of good information, maturity and helpful folks.

Also has an indoor range on location 50 yard indoor range.
