Alright Lads...

I'll pose this query in hopes of not starting a major battle (minor skirmishes are OK).

That crazy "TCB in Tenn"" has me thinking about a .22 magnum. I have a Ruger revolver that shoots 'em (and a large-ish cache of ammo) but no rifle.

The two .22 magnum rifles that really interest me are the CZ-452 and the Ruger 77/22 (laminated stock version, "all-weather" finish and the semi-heavy target barrel).

Am leaning hard toward the Ruger - partially because I really like the look of the laminated stock.

Am mostly interested in buying "used-but-good-condition" and I am allergic to buying used scopes so the purchase would have to be "rifle only".

So - for those of you who own, or have owned, either/both - how about sharing the Good, Bad and the Other with me? :)

Anyone know what such a rifle in either model can be bought for ? Just scanning on GunBroker it appears the Ruger is about $$60-$80 more expensive.

Use of the rifle will be mostly informal pestering of the local crows, woodchucks, raccoons, skunks and maybe a song-dog or two.

Thanks Y'All,:)

P.S. Have heard there are some special (and expensive) rings/bases required for scope-mounting on the CZ rifles and some minor gunsmithing involved. Anyone know about that ?

The Ruger is a nice rifle, I have never shot or handled any of the CZ's but all the talk is they are pretty decent. I used to have a Mossberg bolt action, the model escapes me right now, that was very accurate out to 150 or so yards.

Hi Jeff...

I had a Mossberg too as a teen. It was the 640K "Chuckster" and a very early design and pretty accurate. Problem is they are a PITA to mount a modern scope on.

Have also been considering this one...

the model 93 from Savage (for about $350 NIB).

:)

cz, not knowing accuracy on either of these, chances are , that any cz you pick will allways bemore accurate than a ruger...

The best .22 mag I have shot yet as far as accuracy goes is the Marlin 25mn I inherited from my grandpa. I dropped an aftermarket trigger in and it out shoots most of my more expensive rifles, big or small.

There is no proof available that would demonstrate CZ's accuracy over the Ruger. Both are remarkably accurate with ammunition that they like.

The CZ 452 Varmint, in .22 WMR, is unavailable in the Laminated stock version, or stainless steel. The blues, Hardwood stocked version lists at $412.99

The Ruger K77/22-VBZ is the heavy barrel, laminated stock version. It lists for $812.00

Both are available for much less at distributors.

Either one will be at least as accurate as you are.:)

Shawnee I haven't shot either of the rifles you have mentioned but I do have two marlin bolts. A 783 in walnut and an 883 with the laminated stock. I just bought the 883 from a pawn shop in like new condition for $140 OTD.

Both of the guns will shoot 1 1/5" or less groups at 100 yards. Sometimes as small as 3/4". The plated ammo from CCI would shoot okay for about 25 shots and then start to open up until the barrel was cleaned. If I stick with the winchester or Armscor that has a real jacket on it this doesn't happen.

Look at RFC. There is lots of rimfire info over there. Like here, most will tell you to buy what they like. But then again lots of those guys have tried them all and can give you some good feedback.

The cz will beat anything out of the box. You will need high rings but they are not more than $50. I had a Marlin .22 mag and couldn't figure out what it was for. It fills an unnecessary gap between .22 LR and .223 IMO. The ammo is so pricey one may as well shoot .223

Browning is coming out with a "magnum" version of the T-bolt---if its anything like my .22lr model----I'll be snapping one up quickly.

not sayin its a typical group but with my 925m i got 3/8" at 100yd a few times.... 5 shot groups, inch or less was pretty common. only once every so often w/cci 40g jhp and dead calm day. of the two though, haven't a clue really never shot em but hear good of both:cool:. been a few months since i last shot the 925m so i had about 1-3/4 yesterday morning lol. it does need about 5 shots before it starts shooting well if i just cleaned it though:confused:

Wow Shawnee, I didn't know I was getting to ya. Next thing you know you will be buying a .308 or a 30-06 and we will be able to say for sure that we have reached TEOTWAWKI! :p

No surprise that I am a huge fan of the Ruger 77/22m, great rifles that are both beautiful and as accurate as one can ask for. Pull the trigger (literally and figuratively) and buy you one and you will be very pleased.

I know that a Marlin is not on your list...but...

one of the guys that I hunt with has Marlin bolt action in .22 mag that is a few years old; it's been reliable & accurate for him; I liked his so much that I snagged a lightly used Marlin 925 w/ Tasco 3 - 12 x 40 "MAG" scope for $170; hopefully I'll be able to shoot it later this week; after some reviewing & recommendations I chose to start with Hornady 30gr V-Max for squirrels & groundhogs out to 100 yards

LOLOLOL! :D:D:D

You'll have to wait longer than TEOTWAWKI before I buy a .308.

When does it debut ?????

Well, if you have to choose between these two, then do the cz. but first, i would look up anything in the marlin 7 series, a mossberg chuckster, a marlin 99m2 semiauto mag(finest ever made)a marlin 99m1, second finest 22mag semiauto ever made, a brno, in takedown mode, and a ruger in 10.22 mag , or a ruger lever mag. Those first 5 are absolutely the best ever, as far as 22 mags go.

Check out the Ruger 96/22M, I put a Williams ghost ring/firesight set on and love it for accuracy. Also check out the Taurus M72C, pump action. Not as accurate, but a boat load of fun to shoot.

Don't have too high expectations on accuracy. The 22WMR is not the 17HMR. I'm waiting for a 5mm to come out as I was looking for a 22mag also. Same choices as yours.... Savage, CZ, and Marlin.

The CZ452 with trigger work or CZ453, if offered in .22WMR, would be my pick, just because I had the 452.

The ruger is not worth the added expense over the CZ in my opinion. I own a 452 in 22lr and it is an excellent rifle. BKL rings fit CZs with the 11mm dovetail. But the American has standard dovetails and is just as accurate as the varmint. From all reports I have seen. You should really ask this question on rimfirecentral. They can also tell you every combination of rings that will work.

RangerRuck does the marlin 99m1 or m2 come in a magnum I have never seen one and didn't even know they made one,
Now to the OP here is my ruger 77/22VMBBZ mypictures004-6.jpg mypictures003-7.jpg that shoots 1.25 to 1.5 inch groups at 200 yards I had a CZ that I traded for this one I liked the CZ a lot but liked this one better.
