    Hi All,
If you were to re-barrel an M1, which .308 barrel would you buy: Wilson, Criterion, or Douglas?...Can't afford a Krieger.

Looking for good accuracy for about $200.

    Thanks!

    TCW,

I own two Match Grade M1's. Both in .308. One Wilson, one Douglas. Both are great shooters.

I admit I do not know a lot about Garands but I thought they were chambered for 30-06? Are you converting it to .308? If so, what's involved other than switching the barrel? New bolt? Different "clips"???

Sorry if my questions seem dumb but I would like to get a Garand someday but I'm not really crazy about the 30-06 so this peaked my interest. Thanks

SARCO has Citadel barrels brand new for $135 plus shipping.

Numrich Gun Parts has them for around $150 or so.

Switch barrels (properly headspaced, of course) and put in a mag well block to prevent insertion of '06 ammo (safety feature only, not needed for function) and you are done.

    Same clips....

I don't own one.... but everything I've read from others leads me to believe that they have a VERY spotty record for quality. Reports of flaky performance from them abound.

For one thing... none of the well known Garand 'smiths sells or uses them on their work. This should tell you something.

Why try to save a few bucks on a barrel, the heart of accuracy in any rifle, when you can get a barrel from a KNOWN supplier of good stuff for $20 more.
Penny wise, pound foolish???.... and "Cheap" is my middle name too.

Stick with the Wilson, Criterion, or Douglas if you want a fer shure good shooter.

    Just my 2 bits,
