Which 308 semi-auto? (not AR10/FAL)

Automatically I'm leaning towards the M1A but want to consider other options.

No AR10 type, no FAL

I considered the FN FNAR, but it's not threaded, so that's out.

What other semi-autos are at least as accurate and reliable as the M1A?
 
In this order......

LRB Arms M14SA or M25 (depending on planned optics over the receiver or iron sight only)
JRA M14 or M21 (Same as above)
Fulton Armory M14
Springfield Armory M1A
Scar17
PTR91 GI

Compare disassembly procedures.

Compare reliability in less than ideal conditions vs a well built M14/M1A.

Shoot both next to one another and find out which rifle YOU shoot better.

Sugestions: Leave the bench behind.

Reason: It's tooooooo heavy.:)

Well, an LMT MWS or a KAC SR-25/M110 or an Armalite AR-10 are all more accurate than an M14 / M1A, and are more reliable. But you don't want an AR-10.

You're considering the FNAR which is just a Browning BAR hunting rifle in modern sporting rifle trim, so it's not even as rugged as an M1A/M14. The FNAR also uses expensive proprietary mags. Yet, you're ruling out another FN product, the FAL, which is an incredibly rugged and reliable rifle that's at least as accurate as an M1A/M14, and uses widely available inexpensive magazines.

So, that really leaves only the FN SCAR-17, a high end HK-91 clone, or maybe a heavy bbl VEPR from Molot. I guess there's also the HK SL8
 
AR10 DGI rifles more reliable than an M14?

Not in my experience.

We kept the M110's in the Pelican's unless they were needed.Over half of the M14 rifles I seen down range on 4 deployments to 2 countries were mis treated, abused, neglected, (simply out of general ignorance) and generally used in place of an issued rifle by delegated SDM's. All of them still worked under these conditions and one was lucky if it even was issued with the proper sling.

FWIW.... All of them were built in the mid 1960's. (Not SEI rebuilds)

Take a well built NIB example that folks in the states can buy with a better bbl, properly fitted stock, and iron sights with more usefulness than BUIS, and the end owner has his money's worth.

FTR....... I might be biased, and my reasons are listed above....among others.:)
 
I recently just picked up a PTR-91 A3R from Atlantic Firearms, and while I love the gun for what it is, I would definitely recommend you go with a more modern design if you plan on having a serious use for this firearm (which I'm guessing you do).

If you've got the cash to make it happen, a Scar 17s is probably your best bet. Compared to something like my PTR, it's a much more user friendly system with a last round bolt hold open, drop free mags, adjustable stock, and monolithic railed upper for optics mounting.
 
Yep, check out the CMP M1 308 Winchester Special.

They are completely overhauled with a new barrel and stock chambered in 308 Winchester.
 
If you would like something a little different find a properly converted to 7.62x51 MAS 49/56. If you stay away from any of the botched Century conversions you will have an accurate (battle rifle accurate) reliable piece. It has a DI gas system and it is just as reliable as an M1A, maybe more so. It is a very underrated rifle. You must use ammunition with military grade primers to avoid the possibility of slamfire. My MAS 49/56 works great, if available it would have been a better choice than a M1 Garand for WWII. Please no jokes about never being fired and only being dropped once.
 
How reliable are 8rd M1Garand enbloc clips in terms of feeding one chambered in 308?

Are there any modifications to the clips themselves?
