I keep mulling over the idea of a .45, but don't want a full size pistol.

Given the choice (and only this choice, no other recommendations are needed) would you pick the Springfield XD compact .45 4", Ruger P345, or a (used) Springfield Champion milspec stainless?

Reason: mostly a range gun, occasional carry. Not going to IPSC with it.

Too close to call! All are excellent choices. I own both the Ruger P345 and the Kimber version of the Champion...
can you rent versions of them?

It might be too big to carry but I'd look into the new FN FNP .45acp pistol. Seems to be a well made overbuilt pistol that holds 15rds of .45acp goodness.:)

I have the XD 45 Comp and the SA 1911 A1 loaded. I really like the XD 45. Carries a higher capacity--lighter than the 1911 and with the 10 rd mag it's an easy gun to conceal. Actually with the 13 rd mag it's pretty easy to conceal too. My XD has had zero malfunctions and is real accurate. I can't ask for more than that

So I took as many as I could get out to shoot, which was everything but the 1911. The nod goes to the XD compact, and that's what I'd choose if I was going with a compact .45.

I gotta agree with those who say go with the XD. I have an XD45 Compact that is awesome. I also have a couple of Springfield 1911's, but they are all full sized. I am just not a fan of the Rugers, but not everyone has the same tastes. The XD feels good in my hand and was very accurate out of the box for me.

i love the xd's i have 2 of them, and the .45 xd would serve you well. but with that said i own a ruger p345 that is the absolute most accurate gun that i own.

You left off a bunch of good guns. The most common one you forgot was the Glock 21, but even if you had included it, I still would have voted for the XD45. I have both a 21 and an XD45, and I prefer the Springfield. The Glock is great, but the XD is even better.

owned all

I own the XD45C, 1911's and the Ruger P345.

I carry the XD. it is hands down the winner. lighter, holds more ammo, etc. etc. etc.

... funny because surprisingly my Ruger P345 is the most accurate, for me, as well. I love that gun!
