Remington 700 5r pr Bergar b14 hmr?
I've owned a bunch of 700's over the years and still own one. My Bergara is the B14 Hunter, but is the same basic rifle. The Bergara is a 700 clone that addresses the 700's flaws. I'd go Bergara over 700 every time. But I'd take a Tikka CTR over both. My Bergara is 6.5 CM, the CTR is 308.
For features, I would prefer the Bergara, but after some time with a local precision rifle smith looking at a few Bergaras on the lathe, it seems machining quality at Remington is considerably more consistent and yields a more true action.
Remington...nope, just kidding. Bergara.
Not knowing that makes a suggestion tougher than it has to be and sometimes “neither” is the response for what a person has in mind. So...hunting rig, mountain rifle, stalking Cape buffalo, or ringing steel?
I’ve only handled a Bergara briefly, browsed specs, and read reviews. I own and have shot a few 700s. The Bergara looks to be a better iteration but I wouldn’t bet my money (or your’s) on it. If pressed I’d likely chose a different option all together (for hunting), but only as a preference.
I was thinking more of the 5r rifling vs normal. I'm not worried about weight. I'd like to target shoot and hunt with it. I handled the bergara it looked and felt good but I haven't bought anything yet. I also like the ruger hawkeye long range target model but not much reviews out on it right now
Toss up. I like Remingtons generally speaking. I'd like to shoot a Bergara. I might go with the latter just to make a personal assessment. The actions are basically the same design.
I once watched a nice 8-minute video by Larry Potterfield about how to turn a Remington 700 into a Bergara.
When you see the Bergara constantly hit .5 or less MOA it'll answer your quest. I called Larry P. and he told me he was out of the Bergaras so then he made the video mentioned above. [funny Newtosavage!]
I got to hold the tikka t3x varmint today. It felt good. Felt a little heavy in the front with that barrel. Bolt was good. But still kinda liking the bergara. Not sure how much smaller profile the barrel is on it?
I'm not a huge fan of 700s, but the only Bergara HMR I've shot was quite a nice rifle. In that price range, the CTR certainly has a lot to offer.
