im currently lookinf to by my first rifle and am looking to either a Colt, Buchmaster, or ( most likely to buy) LMT. just looking for some input from ppl who have used any of these rigs. im interested in mainly plinking and target, but maybe hunting. Also what are the laws in CA about barrel length, how short is too short? thanx in advance for any help.

You know, I entered "best AR15" into the search engine here and got 6,992 threads as a response.

Given how often this question is asked, I would bet that you could get some good information just reading the past threads already archived here. You could probably find some good AR15 information in the "Rifle Forum Reading Library" link in this forum as well.

Also, while I don't know what the laws are in California regarding barrel length, I do know that the Federal law is a 16" minimum with at least 26" OAL. I also know that you'll need to worry about a lot more than barrel length if you are trying to buy an AR15 in California.

When I was into ARs, I found NOVESKE to be the best.

I would put Noveske at the top, followed by LMT, BCM, Colt...

In California you are going to be severely limited due to the funky laws there.

I recommend you try the site calguns.net to make sure you don't get into any problems.

Might also want to read the legal stuff at

    http://www.calgunlaws.com/

As mentioned, brand name and barrel length are the least of your problems in California.

Here is a file that shows you how to determine if what you are looking at is an "assault weapon" in California.

Make sure you're sitting down when you read it.......

I wish I could give more assistance on California law, but as I'm in a "pro-gun" state Federal laws are the only ones I really follow.

Colt, LMT, and Bushmaster are all good brands. Colt and LMT use a few more rigorous quality-control programs as specified by the military, and as a result are probably a safer bet if you're gonna run the rifle hard. However, a Bushmaster is fine for 99% of users. It really depends on what your purposes are for the gun. LMT has traditionally been a good bargain in that it offers most all of Colt's mil-spec quality control plus available features including rails, backup iron sights, and upgraded SOPMOD telestock for a comparable price to a more "standard" Colt.
