If you were making a 7.62x39 bolt action and wanted to use cheap surplus ammo and occasionally the good stuff. Would you use, a 303/311 diameter barrel or 300/308 diameter barrel?

Would you use a 10 twist or a 9.5 twist?
The barrel will be cut to 12".

Thanks in advance,
John

Dang! Won't be able to have an AR or such up dere" but SBRs are o.k.?

The Bloke used a .308 barrel for his personal 7.62x39 Frankenrifle. He explains his design decisions in this video -- I think his choice of bore dimensions was based on his preferred bullet selection:

For myself, I'd probably favor .310-.311". I load for both .30 diameters, but my other 7.62x39 has a .310" bore and if I can I'd like to avoid having two separate sets of loads for the same cartridge.

If you go with a .308” bore, consider if your dies will size the case neck down far enough to hold the smaller bullet tight. A smaller expander ball might help, depending on brass thickness.

If you are looking for a used barrel I'd go 308 1 in 10 for supersonic loads. Mainly because all the used 311 bore barrels I've run into are at least 311 if not 312-314. A 308 take off would be fine to use, just give it a little extra throat to keep pressure spikes down, a la weatherby.

If a new blank is in order I'd go 310 bore with a 1 in 9 or 9.5. My cz 527 has a 9.5 twist and it is super accurate.

What action are you planning on?
