I am considering purchasing a basic AR carbine (if I can find one), and I want to hear some opinions on which ones to consider. I'm not concerned about match grade accuracy or extas/accessories, just a basic carbine with an emphasis on quality and reliability. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

DPMS sportical. it is an optics ready carbine for about 750.. if you can locate one.. DPMS makes great guns, mine has functioned flawlessly... they also offer a great variety of AR configurations...

I have just gone through the same process you're going through.

First I would look at this comparison chart: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pwswheghNQsEuEhjFwPrgTA&hl=en

Then I would read this article by the guy who put the chart together: http://www.tacticalyellowvisor.net/8343/16001.html

Note that if you were to buy a Stag, and then get a LMT Bolt Carrier Group, you're almost there, with respect to a quality basic durable & reliable AR15.

From my research the AR manufacturers to look at are as follows, and their prices reflect their quality:
  • Noveske - Rolls-Royce
  • Colt - Mercedes-Benz
  • LMT - BMW
  • Stag - Toyota

Recently bought an LMT and could not be happier. I might trade it for a Noveske - it's that nice. :)
