.45acp when I carry an auto in CCW mode. Most of the time though it is a revolver in .44 spl.

For liability purposes I would prefer to take my fired brass with me, not leave it scattered about at the scene! :uhoh:

    .38spl, 9x19, .40S&W, .45ACP, depending on my mood.

    Fella's;

I normally carry a .40 S&W. But will also take a .357 magnum under some circumstances. I notice that that option isn't in the poll. And reason why? surely it's not because someone thinks it's neither available nor effective, right?

    I'm talking autoloader calibers...

    ...that's why .357 mag. isn't there.

.45 ACP, with my wheelgun preference going to .357 - although I have a wheelgun in .45ACP as well.

    I don't own a .40 S&W or a .357 Sig. I do own a .45 ACP and a 9mm. I voted .45 ACP, because I would take an 8-shot .45 over an 8-shot 9mm.

    Wow

Lots of .45 fans. I would have chosen that too but my CCW unit is a Kahr .40. The .45 is for home defense, but only if the shottie isn't at hand.

Whichever one shoots to point of aim when I need it to - shot placement is key.

    9mm - best all round for self-defense.

    - mild recoil, not such a nasty blast, high caps, not as sensitive to OAL setbacks, more easily obtained, less expensive, top loads have pretty impressive ballistics etc. etc. - all these comparisons are to its bigger brothers, .40 and .45.

If I had just bought into the 'bigger is better' then I would have had a .38 revolver..it would have been far easier to obtain a license for this..

I voted for the 9mm because it was first. :D
Actually, I like the first three of the list, but don't have any experience with the .357 Sig. However, I do have the warm fuzzies about this newest round because of the ballistic similarity to the .357 Magnumn.

I'd have to say that based on the number of platforms I own for launching it, the 9mm is the winner!!
I have been known to hoof a G36 around as well as a Smith Sigma in .40S&W!!!
Lately, I have been hiding an aluminum framed Taurus M85.
I like the fact that it weighs a little over a pound!!

I have a .357 Magnum as a carry gun, but have been considering an autoloader. I voted .45 ACP, because all things being equal, that's what I want. For me it is the most controllable and accurate round, with more than enough stopping power. That said, I may go with a 9mm or .40 caliber, because I believe they also have more than enough stopping power, and there are a lot of good choices in those calibers. I'm thinking about a CZ Rami because right now most of my handgun shooting is with my CZ75B so that's what I'm used to, but if the new Kahr PM45 proves to be a good gun, I'll consider that.

With my god-like speed, I carry a reversed blade Spyderco and have no need for a gun in this new era.

It's what I practice with the most and as a result it's the round I shoot the best with!

Black Majik has the right answer.

.45 is the best, because that's the caliber 1911s come in.

Even the venerable 1911 is trumped by a long gun though, so I'd take a 12 guage or a 308 over a 45.

    Fighting calibers start with "four."

    ...although I carry a .380 for ultra-compact carry...

Of those listed, 45 ACP. My preference is for 10mm because I feel it's just as effective as 45 ACP but I can get more capacity in the same size gun. The guns I actually carry end up being 40 S&W becuase I find it to be the best balance of power and controllability in the smaller packages.

Let's get serious ... None of the Above

The 10mm AUTO is presently seeing a resurgence as the defensive cartridge of choice for those who are serious about stopping power. :p Excluding it as a candidate among autoloading cartridges preferred for defensive use renders this poll invalid. :neener:
