Which CMP Garand to purchase

Hello all:

Which service grade CMP garand would you recommend purchasing? Do I have a better chance of obtaining a better condition garand if I were to order a more expensive USGI issue rifle, or is the cost related to collectability or some other such factor rather than condition?

Worth the wait...

I ordered the HRA SG. It was a 4 month wait, but I got a 1953 rifle in excellent condition. Probably fired in training if at all. A real gem, IMO.
 
Depends on what you want....

If you want a shooter to keep in original condition, then a service grade is probably the way to go. If, on the other hand, you want something as the base for a restoration project, then you might save some $$'s by buying rack grade and then restoring from there. If you want a real collector, then as CZ 75 BD suggests you might want to wait it out for one. That's my three cents (adjusted for inflation....);)
 
Thanks for the replies. I'm planning to keep the rifle "stock," so to speak. I'll place my order for the HRA SG garand, in accordance with your suggestions.

A45ACP, also look at the Spingfield service grades from the CMP. I received a rifle in excellent condition only two weeks after mailing in the order. The waiting period is supposedly longer for the H&R, about three months or so. Just ask the CMP to send you an M-1 with a high serial number if possible and in nice condition. I don't need to change anything on mine.
 
My experience is much like StephenT's . . . earlier this month, I ordered a SG SA from CMP. Two weeks to the day after I sent in my paperwork, I received a very nice rifle. I politely asked for a high SN rifle with decent bore and a stock that wasn't TOO badly beat up, and that's what I got. :D
 
Alright, in view of the further responses I received, I ordered a SG SA Garand, with a humble request (inasmuch as it was possible) for a high serial number, and bore and stock in as good condition as possible. Time will tell.

I'm sure I'll be happy in any case.

Next time, maybe I'll be able to order the HRA.

I am thinking of doing the same thing. The only thing is it might not have seen battle time... so I will feel obligated to get another one later! :D
 
You may find that you can't stop at just one. Rule of Threes! (3 rifles to use the stacking swivel).
I have six CMP rifles, 3 are Garands. SG HRA, SG SA Dane VAR, RG WRA.
The SA & WRA are both WWII era.
