Dear THR,
Which combination do you prefer for SD?

I'd always prefer to have a 12GA. Pump and a 1911. But that ain't always possible or feasible. Not being LEO, I seldom feel the need for more than one gun at a time for everyday carry.

None of the above. I rotate between a Glock 36 (.45ACP) in a Crossbreed Supertuck, S&W 624 (.44Spec) in a Lobo IWB and a Ruger LC9 (9mm) in a pocket holster.

None of the above, thanks. Why should I be limited to the choices made by three folks unknown to me?

If I want to carry a combo of auto pistols, I would prefer they be able to use the same magazines! G17 and G26 come to mind, if big/small is desired; G17 and G17, better, if the second need not be small. I do not currently own Glocks; just using them as an example. In the past, I owned and used multiple G22 and G27 pistols, and multiple P229 pistols, and multiple 1911 pistols.

I do own multiple .357 revolvers, which I do carry in combos, or in a combo with a P229 or 1911.

Why should I be limited to the choices made by three folks unknown to me?
Because that's the question asked by the OP, and the only answers avaliable if you want to answer the OP's question are those three choices.

:Looks in Gun Safe, checks ammo stocks:

Let's see, I got a Ruger GP100 .357, with some 158gr SJHP.

I got a Walther P99AS .40 S&W with some 135gr JHP.

I got a Walther P99AS 9mm, and a Taurus PT92AF 9mm, but I only have 115gr FMJ for 'em. :scrutiny:

I got a Springfield V-10 and an Operator 1911 .45ACP, but I'm currently out of .45ACP. :uhoh:

I won't go into the rifles or shotgun.

I guess I'm SOL if TSHTF. I don't have any of the guns listed in the poll.

I am so dead if a bad guy breaks in.

Sorry for the snark, but seriously? WTH? SD/HD is less about hardware than mindset and preparation. Granted, getting a decent gun is part of preparation, but it doesn't stop there.

Range time, and being mentally prepared to do what needs doing when it needs to be done will put metal on target when it's crunch time, and that's more effective than any number of fancy, high-$$$ guns

HK & GLOCK all the way

Even better would be my FN FNP-45 & GLOCK 29

Or

My Kimber Custom Crimson Carry & Kimber Solo CDP (still waiting to find one)

There really isn't any right or wrong. (except that the folks that mention rifles/shotguns in a handgun list for use as apparently concealed carry is a bit much in my opinion)

I would continue to use my Custom Colt 21st Century LtWgt Commander in a Milt Sparks HR-LTD (think thin VM II) and a hammerless S&W 'J' frame.

I carried the Bodyguard family most of my life, starting with a model 38 in Vietnam. Stuck with the various shrouded hammer variants until recently. About 12 years ago I went to the 642 with a CTC laser grip, carried in my left front pocket in a Mitch Rosen or if necessary on the belt in the old Bianchi model 55 Lightening.

Just my way. I like the added and in some cases very unique capabilities the hammerless/shrouded 'J' frames can offer.

Good luck with your choices.

Fred

TO me, SD means self-defense or CCW. HD is home defense. A shotgun or AR aren't suitable for SD, IMO, but are perfect for HD.

Maybe it's me, but I'd rather carry a primary SD weapon with 1 or 2 reloads than a BUG.
However, that wasn't a choice.

Larry I agree with you about HD vs SD.

I always carry one additional magazine for my primary sidearm. (If I need more than one magazine, I will be carrying a long arm, and the sidearm just moved to secondary position in the batting order, with the BUG to third.)

I disagree with you about a BUG. I don't know about your life, but in my life STUFF HAPPENS. I have been in enough gunfights to know that guns jam, break, get shot, get dropped, get taken away, and sometimes simply black magic stuff happens.

In my life if I am in a firefight it is usually not a good day and bad stuff tends to pile on bad stuff.

Frankly in my life, "STUFF STILL HAPPENS". So I still keep Plan 'B' on standby and carry a BUG.

Because of that, I believe a plan 'B' is always a good idea. I believe that in all things. My daughters say that it is because I am just to negative. I have found having a Plan 'B' has kept me from getting REAL negative during my life.

That is exactly what the BUG is for. I have carried a Shrouded or hammerless 'j' frame for BUG duties since 1967. In Vietnam I carried a M14 for my first 1.5 tours, and a 1911 or Victory model S&W as secondary. In my trouser's cargo pocket there was ALWAYS a S&W model 38 as tertiary. I left the Smith there with a friend when I came home.

By the way I never have had to use my BUG. I had to use the secondary several times in Vietnam, but the tertiary BUG was never needed, thank GOD.

May you never need a Plan 'B'. Good luck.

Fred

Why are you asking us? To Settle a bet with your buddies? Who has the best system according to THR? Or are you looking for advice on what you should do? I'll tell you what works for me, but that probably won't help you much. Look to the above posts. Get a gun YOU will carry with you ALL the darn time. Then get a bug with the same priorities. Then train with them both. For me, primary carry is a Glock 30 AIWB with one spare G21 magazine. When I carry a bug, it's my Ruger sp101 at 8:00. Good luck finding a system that works for you

I'm with those who don't like any of the options because they are oddly specific, out of my price range anyway, I have no experience with which to base an opinion, and let's face it, they are the same specific guns that el godfather puts in every opinion poll he posts.

The SD combo that would really work for me would be a full sized M&P and an M&P compact. As for 9 or 40... don't really care which. But I'd want common ammo and mags.

I'll take B, just because I've always wanted a Dan Wesson BobTail, and could never justify spending the money.

I think many people aren't reading the original post before responding...

But to clarify my vote, none of the options are very good, or in other words, none of your friend's combinations are very good.

I would like to see a shotgun/revolver combination, myself. (12ga/.38+P) Or if insistent on two handguns; one revolver and one auto. (.38+P and .40 are my choice.)

None of the above. To me they don't make sense. Multiple calibers and multible makers makes for TOO much to go wrong. If my bug is a G26, than my primary should be a G17, same caliber same mags for reloads. Unless you use a J frame for your BUG which is simplicity itself.

Another odd poll from el godfather. I pick none of the above. The combos don't make any sense to me at all.

Is this a real question, or a "fantasy sports team" type of question?

The proposed choices don't seem to be meant to be complementary to each other. Were they selected because you liked them in brochures, gun magazines, manufacturer websites or a gun store display case? Any actual live-fire time with any of them? Are they intended to fit some criteria other than being popular, or tacti-cool?

I own a couple of G26's. Decent smallish 9's. My favorite among the Glock model line.

I wouldn't pick any of those "pairings" (if intended to be used in "pairs"), myself.

However, in the spirit of the OP's poll, I could make do with either Choice B or C, if required to do so. I suppose if forced to choose from among that pair, the one with the G26 would probably win for practicality, convenience, maintenance and ease of support (in the event of repair by myself, as an armorer, or factory repair).

Neither pairing in B or C would be something I'd particularly come up with if starting with a blank sheet of paper, though ...

Those being the choices I had to choose the HK/Glock but the chances of me owning that combo is slim to none and slim left town. Chances of me carrying that combo is on par with me winning the Powerball and I don't buy tickets.

Combos I do carry include

Glock 19/ Kel Tec PF-9
S&W 2 inch Model 15/ 642

For many years I carried a 1911/ Semmerling combo till someone offered way too much for the LM4.

This makes no sense. Why have such disparate calibers, action types and control locations as a combo? Something like, for example, a full size and compact 1911, or a full-size and subcompact Glock, does make sense.
