which for home defense, Glock 30 or XD tactical 9mm?

I have my opinion, but I told my buddy I'd pose his question to you experts. If it were you, which of these would you choose for home defense - assuming you could shoot both proficiently.

Grrr... I clicked that I wanted to add a poll but it didn't take. Sorry. Perhaps you could still give your thoughts.

Whichever I were most proficient with. 45 vs 9mm is another post in and of itself. I wouldn't feel under-gunned with either caliber or pistol.

For home defense, since you are not limited by carry constraints, I would tend to lean towards full size pistols. I owned a G30 and it shot well for me but I would prefer a full size 45 for HD.

You need to factor in 10 rounds of 45ACP vs 16 rounds of 9mm.

Also, unless you reload, cost of range practice for 45ACP will be significantly higher than 9mm (maybe more than double the cost).

Between the two, I would lean towards XD 9.

Now, if you said full size XDM 45 vs XDM 9, I would lean towards XDM 45.

You'll have to wait for the experts, but I'll give you my 2cents worth.

Go with the larger capacity 9mm if it's only for home defense. I prefer Glock over XD personally but I own and shoot equally well with either. If you plan on carry later on, go with the smaller Glock.

You need to factor in 10 rounds of 45ACP vs 16 rounds of 9mm.

If capacity is a concern, you can use G21 mags in a G30 and install A & G grip sleeves to extend the grip. You then have a functional "full size" HD weapon that can also be used for carry by putting the 10 round mags back in it.

This is my setup along with a G29 with G20 mags in it and I put the 10 round mags back in it for carry.

The compact guns are easier to carry or conceal IMO.

Having said that, if you are going to practice a lot (which is always good) 9mm ammo is more affordable.

I myself keep a SR9 for HD mainlt because of the thumb saftey. I can keep a round chambered and no problem finding the safety in the dark of night. Why the caliber issuefor HD? You're talking close quarters here. Compromise, Go with a Glock 22 or XDM40. The SR9 is slim, built like a 1911 but carries 17 rds. and has the manual safety. All of these Arms will accomplish the task in question as will a Mossberg 500A loaded with Winchesters new HD #2/4 shells.

Why the Glock 30 for home defense? It's a small CCW pistol. If he's considering a full size XD Tactical (5" bbl) then why not a full size Glock 21 (4.6" bbl) for home defense?

First and foremost - I suggest he choose a pistol that fits his hand and feels really good when he grips it.

It should also have a natural "pointability" characteristic - meaning that when he extends his firing arm the muzzle should naturally come to rest on the target without pointing high or low. It should be as natural as pointing his index finger at the target.

For best out of box reliability I suggest a Glock in 9mm or a S&W M&P in .40 S&W or .45 ACP.

I suggest a full-size model for home defense (and recreational shooting). If it might be used for CCW in the future then a compact model might be a better choice for general-purpose defensive use.

these are 2 totally different guns in many ways. I would choose the xd for several reasons. If it was an xd vs. a 9mm glock, then that would be alot tougher. I would go with the xd because i do not like baby glocks, and especially in any caliber other than 9mm. additionally the xd will give you more capacity, should be easier to shoot fast, which is what you need, as well it will allow to use a weapon mounted light if you so choose, that is of a good size, and lumen, as compared to the smaller lights that you are stuck with on the smaller guns.
