which gas piston to install, or does it matter?

FN America SLP and it comes with two gas pistons.

Here is relevant page from owner's manual. I shoot heavier 00 or similar 3" shells. Does it matter which piston I use?

You should use the heavy load piston with the shells you’ve stated you will be using. The light piston will work too but will cause more wear and tear. The heavy piston will cause less wear and tear.

You are welcome. Use the light piston for dove loads, target loads and the equivalent. Though in reality I can’t see shooting those types of shells through a SLP.
