I went with a friend and helped him pick out his first handgun today, he ended up getting a XD45.

It kinda made me happier to bring somebody into shooting and then them buying a gun then buying one for myself.

Does anybody else feel the same way?

Having a friend buy a gun for the first time then me buying a gun would certainly be better than just me buying a gun.

I was fortunate enough to have a friend at work who has a large assortment of pistols that I got to shoot my first time out. Desert Eagle .45, 4" Kimber 1911, Glock G26, G26 with .22lr conversion, CZ 2075 Rami .40, some little cheapie European .25ACP with a goofy magazine release(no button, you yank the magazine out... ha), and a Springfield XDM 9mm...

Having all of those different guns/calibers to shoot my first time out was really nice in finding how much the overall weights of guns affected the perceived recoil, and the way different calibers felt in relation to each other.

It is my personal goal to eventually have 4-6 pistols in different platforms/calibers strictly for having a variety of things to shoot for fun/friends/introducing new people to shooting. I'm going to be picking up a .22lr MK3 next week to save money myself, but I suspect it will be a great starter gun when I take someone to the range... after that a 9mm will bridge the gap between it and my .45.

It is fun helping someone out. Better yet had my boss ask me which shotgun he should get for HD. He wanted something inexpensive and small for him and his wife to handle. I recommended the 870 or mossberg. Told him it would be personal preference between the two. I have both so he fired both and went with the 870.

It's definitely more fun to get friends/family into shooting or helping them pick out a gun, to impart your knowledge (kinda reminds me my head isn't full of useless junk) :)

I enjoy buying guns for myself, but the pleasure fades somewhat as the prospect of the next one starts to peek over the horizon.

Helping friends find the perfect gun tickles that "Santa" gene in me, and you can derive joy every time you see them enjoying their new gun, possibly for years on end.

Everything is better when you share it with a friend or someone you care about. Teaching someone to shoot, introducing someone to guns and the fun and responsibility of gun ownership is more pleasurable than any gun activity alone.
