I bought an experienced Kimber 8400 in 300 WSM. It had the Kimber bases and with the famous dove tail front and adjustable rear with 1" rings. I am not fond of these types of rings. I like minimum moving parts. So I ordered a set of one-piece light-weight Talley rings/mounts.

Now I have a little problem. As you might expect, the adjust rear base allows for aligning the scope very close to optical center. But, with the one-piece mount, the scope has to be adjusted 5" (20 clicks at 1/4") to the left.

The scope is a brand new Zeiss HD5 2-10x which I am contemplating keeping. FYI, I just place it in the rings with paper in between and hold it down with rubber rings. I do not wish to fully mount / scratch the scope in case I choose to return it.

My main concern is, once I zero at 200, will the Talleys be off at 400? I have never shot at long distances before. I need to make sure I have an accurate rig. I would hate to miss my Elk due to poor preparation.

So what should I do? Adj rear, or one-piece Talley?

Thanks.

If it were me with an expensive elk hunt looming, I would put a leupold vx3 3.5-10xx40 duplex in prw rings on warne bases. Or otherwise figure out what you want to do with the zeiss and return it or mount it solid. Fwiw I used the setup above to take a mule deer buck at over 350 yds. No probs. Kimber 270 wsm

The reason I am in this mess in because of Leupold. I bought a VX6 2-12x with the lighted cross hair. A piece of junk. Was not focused and the LED would not shut off. That was my first and last Leupold.

Well, at 20 clicks from center, your nearing halfway through your adjustment range. However, that should not be a problem. Once its zeroed, you will never know the difference.

My leupold is an older one. I hate the new finger adjustable knobs on the vx2's. They have slop on all three of them I have tried and are not of true leupold quality. The company may have slipped a bit.

That scope has 60moa windage adjustment.

5" at 100 yards? 5" from what? Whatever the scope was set at when you got it?

I don't see that you have a problem. Keep the Talleys and shoot it.

I use the Leupold "Zero Point Boresighter", about the only thing I like from Leupold. It allows for extremely accurate bore sighting. If look thru my mounted scopes on the centerfire rifles (308 and 223) zeroed for 200 yards, the crosshairs are smack on the center line and, depending on caliber, between the 6 and 8 markers on Zero Point. I need to turn the windage 20 clicks , L to get the brand new Zeiss crosshairs to be on center line. Once Zeroed at 200, will that effect the 400 yard windage?

No it will not. Your shots at 400 will be slightly off to the right but it has nothing to do with the mount.
