Good ol ought six

I had a Ruger Ranch rifle for a while, sold it and don't miss it a bit. Love my Weatherby 30-06. Since I don't plan to go to war I don't feet the need for an AR or similar. For HD work I prefer my 12 gauge and .40

I can't vote in this because I have neither. I don't own a rifle in .223 or 30-06.

Growing up in lower MI, firearm hunting was with shotguns and muzzle loaders, so I never even held a centerfire rifle until I was in the Army.

I do have a couple of other rifle calibers, just not those.

Gave the .30-06, a 700 BDL, to one of my sons about five years ago.

It's been replaced with a Tikka T3 Hunter in 6.5x55SE.

A very good decision for me.

No use or interest in the 223. When there were woodchucks here the old 222 was used some.

The 30-06 is the winner of both world wars!

The 223 is the looser of wars. Not even legal for deer. It's a rifle cartridge however and that's good. Some use it here for target shooting.

30/06

If I was limited to ONE caliber only it would be a 30/06. It's utility is almost endless. It can be used for woodchucks or it COULD be used for the big bears with a proper load and a good marksman behind it. Granted it would not be the best choice for either but it could do the job. I can not say the same for the 223.:)

Someone said that 7.62x39 is more widely in use but I highly doubt that considering our own military uses 5.56/223

Someone said world wide "maybe". Yeah right. The AK-47 is by far the most produced rifle of any ever made. Some countries incorporate that rifle in their flag. It is used by the military in dozens if not hundreds of countries. NATO doesn't begin to outnumber the accumulation of AK's in other nations.

Besides you said "our own military". The web is world wide. The world wide web - www - that's why they use that in addresses for web sites. This board has a lot of members from countries other than the USA. I doubt there are Chinese people on this board but I do know that China used the AK-47 for decades. Last I heard they were replacing it but still - do you know how big their army is? I've seen reports (CNN) that say they have 2.8 million soldiers. That's just active duty military. China is very capable of putting together a much larger army when needed. They sent half a million men into Korea to drive the US back away from their border back during the Korean War. China is very apt to under sell the size of their military if anything.

No way there are more .223 rounds in the world than 7.62 x 39 rounds. That's just true.

4 x 30-06.

1/2 of a 5.56. Just the lower. Does that count? I voted 30-06 only because it still might turn into something else.

Go back and read the OP again.

It clearly states that the question is about ammunition.

;)

30-06 only, I make my own ammo. Never needed a 223 around here, smaller then I want o use on deer and too big for rabbit. Only real in between around here is yotes and I don't keep pelts to I don't mind that the 30-06 blows them to bits. Nothing "wrong" with a 223 it just does not fit any of my criteria.

I actually have more 30-06 ammo due to getting a few ammo cans of milsurp that was so cheap I couldn't say no.
