Which scope for a Ruger 10/22?

What kind of barrel and stock are we dealing with here?

Off the bat, Nikon, but i want back-story! and that might lead the casual reader to give you some unforeseen suggestions.

I don't know much about the Mueller, but I used the heck out of a Nikon Prostaff 3x9-40 on a G3 clone, and it ran like a top. On a 22 I'd be more forgiving. I'm looking at similar optics for a 10/22 build myself, so I'll be following this thread.

+1 for the Nikon, eager to hear about the other.

On a 10/22, the 3-9x probably has all the magnification you'll ever need, and it's a solid scope. Most of the time I imagine it'll be dialed to 4x or 6x and just stay there for general use.

The Nikon parallaxes at 100, too far for a .22 IMO.

The other scope has a adjustable objective lens so it can be set up for .22 distances. I never heard of "Meuller" and at ~ $120 it aint gonna be anything special.:scrutiny:

I would recomend a fixed 4X or 6X rimfire or shotgun scope (50-75 yd parallax). And Id pay at least $250 for it. ;)

I agree, but there are cheap scopes that do fine on a .22lr. I find 4x Bushnells to be more than adequate. It was my first "real" scope and is still holding up well.

B John is this what you are talking about?

Yes.

Before you drop any money, Id try to compair a good fixed 4X or 6X aganst a cheap scope with a big range of magnifacation.

The fixed scope will have a much longer eye relief, more forgiving eye relief, much more light transmition, less distortion, and no chance to change POI with a change in magnification. It also has a better chance of remaining waterproof. A good fixed scope will also be much less expensive than a good varible without loosing otical quality.

There is "no free lunch" when it comes to optics.:cuss:

I agree with both BJ and SATX...as improbable as that is, there are good scopes under $250.00 but most are not variable. The Leupy that SATX mentioned is okay, but I am not particularly fond of Leupold. Most of their new scopes are made in CHINA and the quality for the price is pretty low IMHO.

So what would be an alternative to Leupold and Nikon that I could use with a rimfire?

I'm picking up a Mueller APV for my .17 hmr. When I get my rifle and scope to the range I will do a range report. I heard they are pretty decent so I am crossing my fingers.

I have a $30 Bushnell 4x32mm I swap with my red dot for different purposes on my 10/22. I like the Bushnell, but you probably want something of higher quality, I really only use my .22 for plinking purposes.

For that price range (assuming you want to spend about $200) there are a couple Bushnell 3200s, a few Sightron Is, and many Vortex, in addition to the Nikon that you spec'd earlier. All of these riflescopes should do well for your intended purposes. SWFA has them all but I would call Scott at Liberty Optics as he has better pricing and much better service. Scott carries all of these brands except the Sightron IIRC.

I have a Mueller APV on my 10/22 that really is a pleasure to shoot.... Haven't shot the Nikon but would imagine on a 10/22 either work work fine.....;- )

I have a Nikon buckmaster 3-9x on my 10/22 and have no problem with it. I shoot it at 50-100 yards and parallax has never bothered me.

I'll be different I guess. I looked into magification when I got my 10/22, and a neighbor convinced me to get a cheap BSA red dot. I fricking love it. It's so easy to hit a golf ball at 50 yards. I can barely see the ball, but man does that red dot show on it once it's covered.

Only thing I'd change is to go with a x2 with a red dot.

I disagree. I usually have my 3-9 set at full power, and I think a little more magnification would be better. It's for targets though, not hunting.

I haven't used a Mueller yet but they seem to be thought of very highly on the rimfire forums for their price range (and above), especially for the distances you'll shoot with a 22lr. I was going to get one for my 10/22 but ended up picking up a Weaver K4 cheap.

The mueller apv between those choices. I would want "target" knobs to adjust for range in any scope. Otherwise the Simmons 3-9x32/40 scopes are like $19.99 and very clear. Glass for <200yds is easy to find good, I have Simmons scopes, Barsaka Varmint, BSA Sweet 22, BSA Catseye scopes on my 22s. At 200yds you are going to see your target just as good as with a $1000 scope. I like the Sweet 22 scope the best, exposed target knobs, you can get to your range quickly, since the round drops a lot that is a great thing to have.

I have a tasco 6x24 A/O mil-dot scope that I am happy with. The parallax is ajustable from less than 25yds. up. It is zeroed for 50yds. I used the dots for other ranges.

I agree with most of Chuck Hawk's recommendations...how is your Simmons performing King G.? Unfortunately my 10/22 keeps getting the "bottom-of-the-barrel" optics...the ones that get replaced by something better. Hopefully I can replace my M17s scope with a Ziess soon, and replace the Simmons on the .22lr. My Simmons hasn't been too great for me, hope yours is better.

Definalely get a scope with parallax adjustment! I put a Leupold VX-I 3-9x40 on my .22, and sent it back to Leupold to reset the parallax to 50yrds. Not an issue with a hunting rifle, but tring to squeeze that extra .5" out of your groups, parallax sucks.:D

BTW... The VX-I is a great scope for $200

I have a Leupy on an AR, a Buckmaster on a 7mm, a Mueller on a 17HMR, and an old Simmons 22Mag on a 10/22. I consider both the Nikon and the Mueller the best value by far, and the adjustable objective/paralax of the Mueller would win out for me if I were buying for a new rimfire.
