Which scope for the new rifle?

I drink Corona and Carta Blanca when I can’t find my favorite which is Bohemia.

I bought a Remington 700 ADL Package from Cabela’s around 20 years ago. It had a Pine Ridge on it. It was without a doubt the worst scope I’ve ever owned. I’ve stated a number of times my extreme dislike of Vortex Crossfire II scopes but compared to a Pine Ridge a Crossfire is a Razor.

I am keeping it because it might be collectible someday.

I’m a fan of Barsness and just recently read an old article of David Petzal’s in which he speaks highly of John.

His book, Optics for the Hunter, is good. I have another one of his books that he signed for me.

There's a big difference between a collector and a hoarder:p:D

Yeah, you are right. A hoarder is the guy with 5 million primers who doesn't want anybody else to have any. I am a collector. Actually, I usually end up giving away these cheap scopes to some friend in need who doesn't shoot much. Scopes like the Bushnell Sportviews and the BSA Deerhunters. I gave away one a few years ago that I regret though. A Japan made Tasco World Class. I have to be a little more careful.

Yeah those old tascos really are pretty good scopes!

I put my spare World Class Tasco 2-7 on my Dad's rifle after a cheaper scope failed. That was almost 20 years ago. The Tasco is still holding zero.
Yep, wish they still made them like they used to. I've got a 37yr old Bushnell 3x9x40 lite site on my 38yr old Winchester 94AE 30-30. Still holds zero and clear, really no complaints with it other than field of view is a little narrow compared to some newer. No way I'd buy a new comparable Bushnell.

Hey, Loon, I guess what you really need to do it pick up an old Tasco World Class for your new rifle.
I've had more than a few. Before they really gained a cult following I would dig thru all the eBay listings and buy up the ones I recognized as Japan made WC or or most any Japan made tasco lol. Relisted them more accurately and usually made some change on em.

Been on a Simmons kick last couple years

Well, there is a nice Simmons Japan Target Scope listed right now for $245. A 24x 40mm. www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=Simmons+target+scope&_sacat=0

Those are nice scopes, but they are going for more than im willing to spend on them.
Ive been snagging the Whitetail Expeditions lately, for some reason they still tend to be on the cheaper side even tho they have really good optics and features...... probably because they arnt japan made.

Now y'all have me thinking I shouldn't have gave away the old Tasco World Class 3x9x44 I bought back in '95 a few weeks ago. A guy at work bought a used Winchester push feed model 70 chambered for .270. It had a 6-24 scope on it. I told him it was too much on the bottom end for around here. If he was going to shoot long range, hunt a bean field or a clear cut it might be good but hunting in the woods where they like to walk out underneath your stand you need lower magnification than that on the bottom end.

Good to know. I haven't spent much time researching Simmons, so thanks for the knowledge. Yeah, being made in Japan is certainly a good thing now. When I was a little kid, that certainly was not the case.

While I do enjoy vintage.....Can we call 2000 era scopes vintage yet?..Optics, I don't think I'll be putting one on this rifle, especially since I have two really nice options.

Having played with meopta and athlon side by side a bit more, the Meopta definitely got nicer glass, But at least in hand I prefer the form factor of the Athlon better.

I've just had to many Simmons fail for me to trust using one on anything other then a plinking 22lr, the shop I was working at I seen a bunch crap out even 2 that were bad out of the box I was mounting.
I do like the older tasco even the new ones are clear. Any scope after 20 years of more worries me some.

I got that early to mid 90s leupold vari-ii I really like but it's getting some age on it. I like the old weavers but have had some break or fog up, age is the only reason for the failure usually.

The Simmons whitetail are the 2 I had fail, believe that was there top end scope to.
For some reason Simmons used a number of different "whitetail" designators.
The original Whitetails, The Whitetail Classics (of which I don't really consider the midway special 6.5-20x50 to be part of), and then the Whitetail Expeditions which were the top of the line Simmons, and probably the finest general use scope they ever turned out.

While the original Korean made whitetails were pretty decent for the cost they were never really great scopes, most of the whitetail classics were pretty good deals, but also not great.
The notable exceptions being the Philippines made 6.5 - 20s. Midway had those for sale that about a hundred bucks they were (in my opinion) The best optic you could get under 2 or $300. Those things are selling used for double and sometimes triple what they originally sold for.

The Whitetail Expeditions or a whole other family of scopes. I put them right up there with a very best made Philippine scopes of the time. They also weren't cheap if I remember correctly 3 or 400 bucks I think.
The 3-9x42 is one of my favorites to snag when I see them. Can usually get them under a hundred bucks, and compared to my VX3i optically they actually have a advantage, especially in low light...(which might just be the slightly larger objective) Weight an eye relief favor the Leupold though.
