Which semi-auto pistol would you bet your life on out the box?

All guns malfunction

even Glocks. If someone says they don't work for them or they got a bad one I believe them. The stovepiping issue is usually solved by gripping the gun firmer.

I base my choices on what I have owned and what I have heard from other shooters who I personally know. I have owned 6 or 8 eight Glocks over the past 15 or so years and they were all dead nuts reliable. I don't ever remember any malfuction with factory ammo. So for me my first choice is Glock.

Based on my limited experience with the Springfield XD that I owned and all the reviews from friends, the XD would be my second choice and as I said I don't even like them.

I stand by what I said about 1911s because of the 4 that I have owned to this point only one has been reliable out of the box. That one by the way is my Taurus PT1911. I have a second Taurus coming this week and believe me I will tell you if it is or isn't reliable.

Right now Glocks and XDs seem to be leading which doesn't surprise me at all. Hk's and sigs seem to be right up there at the top as well. I am a little surprised that Rugers aren't doing better than they are.

A few last things. I don't care which gun wins I have made my choices and I stand by them. It is interesting to see what guns other people really believe in and it gives me reason to try new things.:D The only guy I take issue with here is the one who would take a Hi-Point over any Glock. The day I see ANY police agency anywhere in the country adopt the HI-Point as their weapon of choice I will buy one. About 40% of the police agencies in this country carry Glocks. I would be willing to bet that the Springfield XD has almost as good a share of the law enforcment market with Sigs, HKs and Smiths filling most of the rest of the holsters. If hi-points were that good don't you think that the bean counters would force police agencies to buy them?

The thought of trusting any auto without testing scares me,but I guess I would say Smith M&P,Glock,or XD.But my daily carry is a Colt 1911 that has had reliability work done and been 100 % I gladley trust my life to it.

Based on my experience...

At this point, nothing is available that I wouldn't question until I had some rounds down range. The Glock arguably has the best reliability rep going, but they aren't perfect; nothing man-made is.

Well, mine have been out of the box a long time, but I rely on the following:

Two Charles Daly 1911's, one full size, one compact. I have owned them for several years, have not had any problems with them at all. Usually carry the compact, save the full size for at home.

A FEG PPK derivative, .32 ACP. Never had any problems with this either, would like to get another mag or two though. (Have 3 now.)

S&W 2214 .22 auto pistol. The only small .22 auto I have found that is absolutely reliable - small enough for a hideout, large enough to shoot accurrately.

I have several more, including several revolvers, but those are wll I really carry except for rare occasions.

If you have to pick up a brand new semi auto "HANDGUN" and go to a gunfight, which gun would it be.

With such vague conditions I'd get the closest thing a long arm and high cap I could get, something like............

I own a few pistols and all of mine have functioned flawlessly. I would have to say Taurus PT-145 Mill Pro, followed by Steyr M40. Wanted to say XDm 40, but I have the 9mm version, so I can't comment about the 40 S&W

I seriously doubt this! My Glock 19 never jammed once and was 100% reliable for me and has been 100% reliable for my son too.
I'm sorry you seriously doubt that Glocks jam but as I said, I have not shot or been around people shooting Glocks when they did not jam. (maybe Glocks don't like me:) )
I do not care what someone buys or shoots, I'm just telling what I have personally seen.

About five months ago I borrowed a friend"s (used) G17 for someone to shoot, that were thinking of buying one.
I explained to them that I personally do not like Glocks but the Glock is right accurate, high capicity and are as simple as guns get.
The gun jammed once in the first magazine and once in the second (different) magazine.

What can I say? I wouldn't trust my life to a new out of the box one.

Dear " M2 Carbine ".
I have never, ever heard,or seen a Glock,or Glocks have the problems that you described ! I'm not a Glock fan,i love Sigs, but i wouldn't hesitate buying one and trusting my life with one in any scenario ! Thousands of people own them and the police love them to death ! If a Glock pistol has that many problems ,then why not return it to the company and have them revamp it ?
I'm sure they would either fix the problems ,or replace the pistol with a new one !
I told you, I am not bad mouthing the gun. I have nothing against the gun. I don't care about Glocks one way or the other, except from personal experience with them I do not want to own one. (I actually refused the gift of two free Glocks from a friend.)

I'm just telling it like it is. The Glock 17, 19 and 26 models that I have shot or have been around when others have been shooting them have had malfunctions. Not constantly of course, but random jams none the less.
Believe it, don't believe it, it makes no difference to me.

My best friend carries a G19. Heck, I hope the thing is reliable if he needs it, but yes, I have seen that gun malfunction when shooting on my range.

Many of the responses are based on what the poster owns. If I KNEW I was headed for a fight, I would take one of my 1911s...as a back up. My primary choice would be a rifle or carbine, depending on the circumstances.

I would be suspect of any firearm I've never fired; don't care what badge it wears.

Based on my experience with them a Glock. My Sig proved very reliable but I have been around more Glocks and never known them not to run well.

I believe a person might regularly experience malfunctions with a glock, I also have a strong suspicion of what the cause of the malfunctions was (if we are talking a box stock glock).

Clint Smith said he sees stoppages from the following in order of frequency: Mags, ammo, shooter error, firearm breakage/malfunction. Some guns are more sensitive to ammo issues than others, some are more prone to operator error and some have more poorly made mags than others.

Bet my life on? Straight out of the box? Without so much as a single practice round through it? Are you kidding me? None of them. Not one.

CZ 75b. However, I also have a Taurus 24/7 Pro 9mm that has run at 100% since the first round put through it. My Kel Tec is also 100%, but I did an extensive fluff & buff before I put the first round through it.

A Colt 1911 I have never had trouble with a Colt from box Other 1911 yes a couple
A Colt 1911 is the last gun I would trust my life too and it was one of the first things I got rid of in Southeast Asia when I was there. A poker game won German Luger in 9 mm saved my hide more than once over there. If memory serves me correctly it was a P 08.

Lemme see...brand new, out of the box, no cleaning, no break-in...and must trust to operate reliably...trouble free out of the box. ALSO, I know I'm going into a gunfight so the gun needs to point naturally for me since I'll very likely have to get a very fast sight aligned sight picture.

I'd want the highest capacity for the caliber of my choice so single stacks are out.

No need to conceal the weapon was stipulated; therefore, I'd go with the longest sight radius and full sized grip.

Reliability is a must. It has to go boom every time I pull the trigger. The tight tollerances of the 1911 frame rules out ALL makes. It's now down to the polymer striker fired pieces.

I guess that leaves the Springfield XD Tactical. 13 +1 rounds of 45 ACP, with a 5" barrel, that goes boom reliable with no issues. Points naturally. I can point and shoot the 10 ring from 10 yards with it.

That is why I own one. Except I went with the compact 10 rounder for concealability and carry the 13 round extended magazine in the highly unlikely event that I'll get into a situation where I need to reload and have lots of ammo available. :p

Glocks are great. Well built, very reliable (in my experience not AS reliable as the XD), easy to use, and high capacity. However, grip angle is a killer for me. They don't point naturally.

FN, M&P, 92F, and SIG don't do it for me. More issues with performance and ergos for my taste.

All mentioned are great guns...so don't get me wrong...I just think the best for ME, right out of the box, KNOWING I'm going into a gunfight: Springfield XD Tactical in 45 ACP.

The op posed the question with the caveat "if you have to..." It's a "for the sake of argument" poser. Nobody is suggesting that you should; only "what if you had to?" And, for me, if I had to, it'd be a Smith Third Generation variant-any one of them.

I would have to go with the xd. I Dont own one currently, but they have thus far proven themselves to have every advantage of the Glock, a better trigger, better sights, a better grip angle (for me), and perhaps most importantly, they dont jam as a result of "limp wristing." I know, i know... dont limp wrist... well, you never know what will happen in a gun fight...shoot your Glock without a good grip and it turns into an expensive yet compicated single shot.
