Which shotguns can you "ghost" a round in on top of the shell carrier?

Which shotguns can you "ghost" a round in? I am referring to the ability to have a shell in the chamber, some shells in the magazine, and another shell on top of the carrier. I know that some early Benelli M1 Super 90's allow this. I also have a buddy with a Beretta auto (390 I think) that will do the same thing. What other shotguns can you do this with?

I can float a shell on the carrier of my new FN SLP Mark 1 giving a total capacity of 10. Dry-cycles fine in this configuration but have not had time to live fire it this way yet . Surprised FN tech guy says it should work in principal when I inquired if this had ever been attempted. I should add that I have a Benelli M4 with a 'free' carrier which allows floating. Floating an extra shell is covered in the USMC Benelli M4 Field manual (which is download-able) but not in the Benelli civilian M4 manual.

You can do this with older Benelli Super Black Eagles very easy. Stoeger 2000's will also do it. With a little work you can also do it with Browning Golds and Winchester SX2s.
Don't get caught doing this hunting ducks though!

If someone knows how to do this with a Beretta 1201FP, I'm all ears! I can't seem to get the bolt closed over the round on the lifter without jamming things up.

I think it may be a feature in many older Benelli shotguns - I know that I can load an extra shell onto the lifter in my H&K imported Benelli M3 Super 90, but it rarely cycles properly in auto with a shell ghost loaded. It works fine if I switch to pump and do it, but it usually sticks me with a failure to eject if I try it in auto, even with heavy-recoil 2 3/4" shells.

To answer my own question, I figured out the secret to doing this with a Beretta 1201. You need to press the shell advance button with the bolt held back to allow the lifter to drop a hair more, which lets the bolt close over the shell.

I think this is highly useful as a carry / storage mode, and this is how I'm going to be storing this shotgun from now on.

I have read that this "secret" is the way to increase shell capacity +1 on teh 1202. So how would pushing the shell advance button allow the carry of an additional round? You cannot top off the magazine with the ghosted shell in the way.

I've been pondering this for weeks now...

Well after some serious reading...

Seems there was an early 1201 and a later version. The later has a magazine tube crimp to limit rounds to 5, and does away with any possibility of floating/ghosting a round as a "+1".

I'd like to find a replacement early mag tube just to make the most of what I have. Or sell mine and get a complete early 1201fp. I might just get creative and machine the crimp out to see what happens. there is a serious tube stiffener around it (for show?) that I could hide any additional material needed for strength.

To float a round on a newer benelli a little dremel work on the rear notch at the back of the carrier will allow it to work.

Make the rear notch look like the front notch, just 180' out. Here is a pic.

Which extension or full-length tube are you using ?
I can only get 9 (7+1+1) 2 3/4 inch shells in my M4 with the factory extension. I have not yet intalled the American made full-length tube.

One of my friends had a Franchi he could do this with, I'm not sure which model but he said he bought it new for $500 back in '04.

I know I've done it with both my 912 and 712. So I would assume it could also be done with 612, 620 and 720. But I have no personal experience with those 3. Though I would like to find a 720 at a reasonable price.

I did get my 1201fp to ghost a round. I'd have to dig up the "how-to" I found that described JB welding up a notch in the bolt/carrier.
