After moving and downsizing I'm finally getting back into 22s. My co-workers and friends are starting to get interested in shooting so I need to save on ammo when I take people to the range. I'm considering a "fun" 22 to let people blast away with. Now I know I can buy a Ruger 10/22 and customize it but I'll spend the same amount of money in the end. Personally I was never a big AR fan so I sorta shy away from those clones. I'm also looking for something that's lefty friendly.

Here is what I'm considering

GSG
HK licensed MP5 clone
Sig 522
ISSC Scar clone
Other?

Anyone have a favorite on this list or maybe one I'm missing?

You won't save any real money buying a 22 gun, unless you plan to sell something else first.

That being said, the MP5-style rifles are quite popular at my range. Everyone seems to really like them.

Now my personal favorite is my Henry Lever Action. Smooth, light, and working the action really gets people into things. Just about non-tactical as you can get!

You're missing the Smth & Wesson M&P15-22. Folks like those a lot. That is the one I would buy today.

I really wanted a GSG and almost bought one more than a couple times. Ultimately, I just felt that I'm better off with a more traditional 22 rifle. The Ruger 10/22 fills the blasting away/plinking niche for me. With a group, the plinking application needs to be filled. I might add that the Marlin M60 also fills this niche quite well at an economical price.

I can vouch for the GSG5 and SIG 522. Maybe consider the S&W 15-22 for your friends that may want to try an AR platform.

Don't forget Mossbergs new tactical .22

Very inexpensive, based on their 702 plinker (same action) but has the appearance of an AR for about $250 or less. I haven't actually laid hands on one yet, so take it FWIW.

I have the Sig 522 and like it allot. It takes black dog mags (can be had for about $11 or $12.00). I usually shoot the Fed bargain brand. Never misses a beat. The stock is a little flimsy but works fine. I like that it has a metal upper. I have a Vortex Strike fire on it. I have put over a thousand rounds with no problem!

Also seems accurate as well!

Great Choice!

Well for me it is definitely the SW 15-22. I had/have most of the tactical 22's available and by far the SW is my favorite.
If you want a left friendly tactical 22 the Walther G22 is right or left convertible. I have a couple and my son has one. They are fun but the only real draw back is the magazine. They only hold 10 rounds. I do have a 45 rd drum but it is a bit pricey for some folks.

Just got one, its a blast. IIRC, you can swap the safety and mag release to make it LH compatible. If you're really not into the AR clones, a 10/22 will do everything you need a .22 to do, and you can make it into anything you want.

I will also vouch for the M&P15-22. I've had mine for about six months and it is an absolute blast to shoot. It's reliable, easy to maintain, and a great way to get familiar with the AR platform without the money commitment.
If you want to look into it I highly recommend these forums for further info.

Did you read the complete OP?

Nipp, Yes! it doesn't have to be an AR clone whatever that means. Also many times "IT IS" cheaper to convert, more accurate and easier to maintain that any of the others. It doesn't get any better than the 10/22 possibilities and reliability no matter how hard others try.

SIG522 hands down.

Shoot for thousands of rounds reliably of pretty much any brand of RN .22LR you can buy - and without frequent cleanings like my GSG5.
Like a Remmy 552 Speedmaster reliable. Or Henry lever .22 reliable.

You could go to war with a SIG522.

I sure like the HK MP5SD and bought it over the GSG. More recently I picked up a M&P 15-22 Talo Pink Platinum, for the wife. Both have been reliable and fun to shoot. No first-hand experience with the Sig or SCAR clone. I love 10/22s and have a bunch. Like others have pointed out - if familiarity with a platform is what you're lookin' to accomplish, then pick it and enjoy. They are all fine, fun and about as inexpensive to shoot as it gets.

Why not save a bunch of money and just buy a marlin semi-auto. Would could buy the rifle and a case of ammo for less money. Maybe not as cool but will out shoot all the tact-kool junk and have a platforum to teach newbes with at a low cost that might get others started with owning there own firearm.

one of the black friday deals at gander mountain has the mossberg tactical for $199, thinking of picking it up... +1 also for the gsg5, waaay too much fun to shoot!

Well I'll be at the big gun show this weekend by Dulles airport so we'll see what catches my eye!

To my mind the .22LR is great fun to shoot but it's got such a low recoil that I like to "interface" with the gun for each shot. From that standpoint single shots with unique actions are sweet, bolts are OK, levers are "da bomb" and my current favourite is my two pump action .22's.

For semi auto I've shot a number of the AR style guns and frankly they are all so big and bulky, especially when fitted with a few accesories, that I just don't see the point. The GSG is small and I wish we could get them up this way but the MP5 connection has kept them prohibited so no joy there. I've also shot a smaller barrel but otherwise stock 10-22 and found it to be pretty nice. So nice in fact that when I get some time I want to do my own "sorta tactical" interpretation using a 10-22 as the basis and going with an absolute minimalist scheme. And if I'm lucky it'll come out looking as nice and as compact as the GSG.

So bottom line? If reviews find that it's a reliable gun to shoot I'd go for the GSG over anything else.

Cool factor, teaching aid and a pacifier for the younger crowd that want to shoot a black rifle.

OH THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION: YES

is there a reason for a "tactical" 22?
A) people like it.
B) it is fun
C) can train muscle memory and save some money switching to gaiko.
D) Military use them
E) all the above

I had several 22LRs and mostly shoot .223, 6x45, 308 and above centerfilre but when they started with the tactical systems whether is AR, AK, H&K or Sniper style more folks are finding the fun on it and we are joining the wave of folks and saving some bucks specially with the ammo, powder and bullets prices going so high.
Cheers.
