whiskey tango halo? a GOOD walmart buying experience?

so i'm at walmart trying to find some neoprene waders and get my fishing license, when i ask to take a look at some .22 rifles. they have the marlin survival rifle i've had my eye upon. i know i could get it for cheaper online, but i was in an implusive mood, but not enough so to have her ring it up right at that second.
so when the paperwork is done for my fishing license, i've made up my mind. i'm gonna buy this rifle. so she hands me the 4473 and i start filling it out while she photocopies my id and chl. it takes her longer than normal to finish filling out the vendor section of the form, but withing 15 minutes or so shes punching it into the register. she then asks "do you need some ammo with that?"
wait a minute, i thought it was walmart policy to NOT sell ammo with weapons. "you can do that? isnt that against store policy?"
"no, we can sell you ammo with that".
"well, i'm already stocked up on .22, but thanks anyway".

i'm still puzzled about this. iirc, alaska is the only state that has walmarts selling rifles/handguns/ammo, and will sell them all to you at the same time! i did get an escort to the door by a manager, but she was nice about it. both the sporting goods clerk and the manager told me "have fun with that!"



and now that i look on gunbroker, i see i payed WAAAAAY too much for it. nuts.

You may have paid too much, but, hey, you can now brag about being a rare person indeed. You actually had a good gun-buying experience at Wally-World. That doesn't happen very often, at least not here in the lower 48.

My last gun buy from Wal-Mart was about 1991-92, when I bought my Marlin mdl 30A.

As soon as the paperwork was finished, the rifle was put in the box, and I had to run to keep up the sporting goods mgr as he took the rifle to the front door. Seems a bit odd to me that I had to go put rifle in trunk of car, then go back in to buy ammo...I think theft of rifle from trunk of car is more likely than someone buying gun & ammo at same time, loading up and blasting the place..............Sheeeeeeshhhh

the only time I bought a gun at WalMart - a Marlin Model 60 .22 as a Christmas present to my youngest brother (he was tired of being the only unarmed member of the family ) they sold me ammo for it at the same time.

Manager did carry it to the car for me, which seemed dumb. Of course, they do that at Academy too.

I bought a case of birdshot (along with two cases of clays, a plastic thrower and all sorts of other shotgun-related stuff) with my 870 and a few bricks of .22 when I bought my Rem 597, both from Wally world. The manager carried the shotgun, I carried the clays and my girlfriend carried the rest, he really didnt like having to run out to my van in the rain with the shotgun box in his arms.

do a search for 'walmart', lots of threads about people getting horrible service from salesstaff that make up store policy to suit them best.


the rifle i bought is a marlin 70 papoose, turns out it wasnt as overpriced as i first thought. have you ever bought a gun thinking it was one thing while it was something else? for some stupid reason i thought i was getting a henry survival rifle (similar to the ar-7), but i like this one as well.


and for the W T H, i actually didnt know what the "H" should have been, but you all knew what it was saying, right? no need to get nitpicky.

i knew i had to break that platform sooner or later. next, i'll be looking for some milsurp rifles to go with my mauser. i really don't have any handguns that are on my "must buy" list. except maybe a .357 magnum.

I apologize on behalf of all the no brainer sales associates that work for Wal-mart. I am fortunate enough to work with support manager that love to shoot and hunt so he puts alot of effort in to getting knowledgable sales staff in the sporting goods area........in fact that is the one area I do feel confident in giving out advice....and if I dont know the answer I will call or send them to a local gun shop in Gastonia,NC called the sportsman's spot. The guy that runs the shop is good guy and has done some fine work for me in the past on my 1911a1.

just as you guys have stories about know nothing sales staff I have just as many stories of people who have no idea about the ammunition or firearm that they have at home.......so it goes bothways...


Since we are all THR people here the next time you run in to a less than knowledgable sales associate plse take 2 minutes to give some advice to the person behind the counter....cuz you just may spark an interest in a young kid mind about shooting sports and also you 'll better the image of us all......

Sheeesh, you guys should move to a gun friendly state like Massachusetts. A couple of months ago I bought a Henry lever action .22 and 4 boxes of that good cheap Federal ammo (550 rounds in a box for $8.49). The biggest problem was the counter guy couldn't find the key to unlock the display case. It took a while...They do escort you to the front door, which is weird.

ain't that the truth.

I was in Wal-Mart a coupla months ago buying WWB 9mm and a redneck in front of me had the following conversation with the clerk (who, BTW, actually knew a little about guns & ammo)

Bubba: "I need some ammo for my Glock"

Clerk: "OK. What kind of Glock is it?"

Bubba: "Huh? I said it's a Glock. You know, the plastic gun!"

Clerk: "Right. But which model?"

Bubba: "I dunno."

Clerk: "Well, which caliber is it in?"

Bubba: "I dunno. What are Glocks normally in?"

to make a long story short, Bubba finally decided it was a 9mm. He then had to have the clerk explain the difference between JHP and FMJ, before finally deciding to buy "the cheapest you got"

I shared a with the clerk once Bubba left. How one could own a gun without knowing what caliber it is chambered for boggles my mind.

So I agree, it's not always on the seller's side of the counter.

That is funny.....cuz I just had the same conversation with a customer and replace 9mm with 12ga and glock with mossberg........and on a off-topic note amonth ago I had a conversation with a guy who was very upset that we didnt carry 8-track players anymore

We're pretty lucky here. The daytime sporting goods guy is pretty knowledgable about guns. I've heard him answer and explain gun questions that customers have had many times. Not only that but he seems to know his archery, fishing, camping, GPS, etc.
He may not be an expert but he knows his outdoors sporting goods.
