White gunk in 9mm seating stem threads. I couldn't adjust the stem. I had to use pliers to get it out.I had what almost looked like the white stuff from JB weld.I had the dies since new. So it's not something that some one else put on. It's a lee die with an aluminum seating adjuster.I got it cleaned up with acetone and a tooth brush. Any clue as to what could have caused it? Thanks Al.

How old are the dies and how were they stored? Do you live where there is hi humidity?

Was it wet or dry gunk?

Dies are about 8 years old. I run a dehumidifier in the gun/loading room. I keep them in the turret on a shelf. I thought oxidation too at 1st. But is was tacky. Like JB weld the white part of the mix. It sure has me puzzled. I checked the rest of my Lee seating dies too. They were all ok.

I'd still say oxidation and condenstion White and aluminum are all the real data provided. Get them clean and dry and apply something to prevent further corrosion like clp that leaves behind a dry preservative.

3M also makes a spray on dry lube; when the carrier flashes off it leaves a thin film of dry lube.Screw the stem out and lube it then screw it in, get the lube into the die between the die threads and the stem threads. WD40 is not a lubricant, it is a water displacement spray; it dries wet contacts on relays and breaker points and a cracked distributor cap, for those of us old enough to remember breaker points.

That should work fine. I'm a big fan of motorcycle chain wax because I have it around. Works better on course threads.

Wd40 the original was original used on Edward's airforce base from what I was told to get condensation out of plane parts...
Wd40 is now a brand that makes a ton of products. I have a corrosion inhibitor product that is another of their specialty formulas.

Breaker points! Ha Ha! A blast from the past! I still have a timing light and a dwell meter in my tool box along with a couple of distributer wrenches! ;)

Sorry for the thread hi-jack! My guess is the white stuff on your dies is oxidation, but thats just a guess.

If you are loading lead bullets at any point it might be lead and wax from the bullet transferring to the seating stem. This has happend to my 357 seater die after years of seating LSWC bullets.

I do too. Plus I have a 68F100 that still has points. It's a backup when the MSD systems goes out.

The white stuff being soft may be water mixing with oil.

WD40 Dry Lube is not your father's WD40. Different animal.
They also have a very effective anti-rust product.
