whitworth Repros??

greetings,

does anyone other than Dixie market a decent Whitworth reproduction? was browsing around and came across DGW's listing, and they want as much for that thing as copy of an 1874 sharps!

maybe this is in line with what they should bring. but it just seems to me (at admitted completel neophyte) that $1,100+ is a bit high for a modern replica.


more info would be appreciated.

I think all the Whitworths come from the same factory in Italy. If you're lucky, you can find an English made repro from Parker-Hale. I haven't.

the one i referenced above from Dixie is listed as "Parker Hale Whitworth Rifle".

and the description has the notes Barrel marked "Parker Hale LTD Birmingham England" in one line in front of sight and "Sir Joseph Whitworths Rifling .451" on left side. but in a a later sentence says Made by Gibbs Rifle Company - Parker Hale/Italy.

don't really know if that adds up to "made in england By P-H" or "italian with P-H markings" or "Made by P-H with Italian parts" or something entirely different.


and i'd be interested in the Italian made repos, as a comparison. that is if they still retain the Whitworth rifling system.
I saw an admittedly poor repro once that was made to externally resemble one of the Brass scoped whitworths used by the Confederacy, but had standard "land and groove" rifling. seller claimed it was "so you didn't have to use those silly 6-side bullets" (what's the point of having a repro if it don't have the MOST distinguishing feature?)

anyway, so what else besides that Parker-Hale DGW has listed is out here?? is pedersoli doing one???

As I understand it, the barrels are made in England. However, the lock, bands, and metal fittings are made and assembled in Italy. I think there's only one Italian factory that makes it for Dixie or the Navy Arms Company.

ah ok,

just got to looking a bit and found a listing for one with the same desciption at $958 from Navy. and i THINK (lost where i was looking at it) i saw one that did not say Parker Hale that was a little less than that, from another source.

i guess my taste in repro rifles just seems to start at around the $900-1,000 mark lol

now if someone made a Kit form whitworth, like they do for the likes of the Hawken and Pensylvania rifles...... but that'd be too easy....

Yup, English Parker Hale barrels assembled into Italian locks & stocks.
I believe they also make a model called the "Volunteer" that looks like a Whitworth, but features .451 caliber "Alexander Henry" rifling; for those who don't want to be bothered by using those "silly 6-sided bullets." (HA-HA) Dixie GW also sells swaged Whitworth bullets and paper patches.

Expensive, yea. But, someday . . . . . . .

sad thing is remembering what makes me want one of the re-pros......

i had one fo those "sometimes even I can't beleive this happened" incidents.

was at a "community yard sale" in a small town near Oxford MS back oh 7-8 years ago, and came across the proverbial "little old lady with a large and long trunk"
long story short if i'd left the house with $200 instead of $100, or had been able to find my cousin, who was with me at this thing, and conjole the extra $100 out of him faster, i could have walked away with what appeared to be an original Whitworth in fairly good shape, with a brass scope, plus the rest of the things in the trunk. But i got beat to the punch by, i think the lady said, 5 minutes.

heck even if the rifle was a repro, it would have been worth $200. plus the trunk which was in fact a rather well done piece with a nested case for the rifle and loading acessories in the bottom. found out the lady's family had been cabinet makers and that the trunk was probably built by which ever of the ancestors had originally owned the rifle. other than that she knew nothing about it, nor any provenance of the contents. appearently she'd needed to clean out her attic before moving to some "retirement village" in Florida or some place.

ever since then, whenever my mind drifts to thinking about getting into MuzzleLoading, it immediately snaps to "look see what you can get in whitworth".

Try $25k for an original.

As for repro with scope, probably $2k. Why $2k? The Davidson scope mount and repro scope have to be custom made.

yeah, someone is i hope laughing all the way to the bank about that one.

why do i hope the other guy made out good?? b/c if he DIDN'T then he/she probably did some horrid thing to that gun.

oh well. don't matter now.
