Who here carries a Sig P232?

What do you like about it?

What do you dislike about it?

I like the trigger, the fact that has a de-cocking lever, the sights, and the way it fits in my hand. It's a good size as well. Lightweight and easy to carry.

I don't like the finger extension on the magazines. I wish I could find base plates that didn't have them.

Very nice gun, too large and expensive for a 380. When it came out it was in competition with the PPK's, that scenario no longer is pertinent. Too many smaller 380 pistols are out for far less money. It also has a limited capacity for such a large heavy gun.

I loved mine. I traded it away to a friend so he could give it to his wife. She was recoil shy, but the .380 didn't bother her too much. We tried 9mm with her, but the only one that seemed to work was a G17 shooting light 115gr rounds. That was going to be too big for practical carry, so I graciously traded my P232 to him for her. It was a tack driver with the fixed barrel, and with the steel frame and .380 it was quite soft shooting. I actually carried it sometimes myself before I traded it. It is so accurate that I had no doubt I could put the rounds where they belonged, so the caliber wasn't too much of an issue for me. I picked it up used myself, though it looked brand new, for only $400. If you can find an good used one, I'd grab it.

like mine very much. it is the aluminum lower ( 15 ounces); the finger extension does not bother me when carrying IWB. it is very accurate and even with +p's the recoil is minimal, like that of a 22lr. it is large for what it does given that sig makes a smaller version sacrificing only 1 round.
though the shield has rather put it way back in my carry rotation.
it still gets lots of range time for fun and training

I've handled a few 230 and 232s. They WERE great guns at the time they were introduced IMO. There are much better .380 or pocket 9s on the market now like the P238 and P938 both from SIG. The Makarov style mag release (on the bottom) takes time to get used to. I have the same type on my AMT and you won't be doing any speed reloads with it.

As far as the magazine goes, I have had some good luck making Franken-mags. Using parts to make a magazine more for your preferences. For example I wasn't fond of the finger rest on a SW Bodyguard so I used the finger extension from an AMT .380 magazine to give my pinky some breathing room.

I own and sometimes carry an older stainless P230. Personally I love it - accurate, manageable recoil in a .380, and just the right size to carry out into crowded locations.

Love my P232 SL.
It lays on the night stand next to bed, even though I have 25+ bigger guns to choose from.

Whats to like?
Night sights, soft recoil, and about twice as accurate as any other .380 I have owned.
And it is just plain high quality is nice to look at and handle.

Whats not to like?
Costs too much, but the quality you get reflects you get what you pay for.
The grips are too thick for pocket carry.
And they squeeked until I put a strip of electrical tape between them and trimmed it flush.

I loved everything about the one I had except the .380 cartridge ... bothers me to pay so much more for so much less power than 9x19 (especially when there's so many 9x19 guns in the same size/weight).

Frankly I think its the best shooting blowback pistol out there and dead sexy looking (especially with Nill grips if you can afford them) ... also I think there's something a little funny about folk that like the PPK over the 230/232.

+1

I sold the last two PPK's I had because I never liked too much about them, other then the James Bond mystique.

I have had a P230 for a very long time. I also have a Makarov and Mauser HSC. The P230 is extremely reliable and quite accurate. It is a great gun. The two negatives are that the trigger on mine has too much creep and the shells eject out to vertically and 1 out of a 100 seems to go inside my shirt collar.

Makarov was cheap and is very functional and reliable. HSC was a deal but is extremely ammunition sensitive and not all that accurate.

Very accurate and reliable.

Trigger pull was very heavy.

Decocker is in the wrong location for left handed use.

The Beretta M84/M85 is the better .380, and the Makorov from various contries, especially Bulgaria is a better choice.

I have a bad back and sometimes can't carry my usual CCW on my belt and during those times I switch to a Sig P232. I have both the alloy and stainless model. The alloy is for carry and the stainless for the range as the weight difference between them is substantial.

The only dislikes I've noted are;

* the lack of a slide release. Like the PPK the slide is held open on the last round, but to hold the slide open you need an empty mag.

* the slide catch easily moves around during cleaning... an annoyance.

* lack of aftermarket night sight installation.

Major feature and likes;

* very light weight

* perfect ergonomics. One of the best natural pointers I've used. This is an easy gun to shoot quickly.

* Very slim and easy to conceal.

* very reliable.

* Easy and fast takedown... even easier than the Beretta 81 series.

* sights are good, trigger is good, (DA/SA or DAO available), it's an easy gun to shoot well.

* there's a huge market and many of these are available either new or used at very good prices. I've paid as little as $315 to a high of $450 for a stainless model with Nill grips.

* grips; standard plastic, Nill, Hogue or Crimson Trace are available. One of them will work for you

I'm a big fan of the Sig because it satisfies most of my needs for a CCW, it's accurate and I shoot it very well. It's in the same quality class as the Beretta and well worth it's price IMHO. I carry it in one of three shoulder holsters. I have a OWB holster but don't use it.

Two of the four, yes four. I did say I'm a fan. The botton alloy model is the one I carry.

A slide release & a different mag release would be cool.

Loved my 230, but was too big for CC, given it was only a .380.

Only beef I ever had was terrible slide bite with the stock grips. No prob with the Hogues, tho.

Maybe you misread the OP? This thread is about NONE of those guns. It IS about the Sig P232.

Don't be a stir stick.

Had a 232. Classic lines but didn't really work for me as a practical gun -- .380 in a package where nowadays you can get a 9mm, 40, or 45 for similar size.

So you would rather not know about alternatives in the same class of pistol?

I'll post what I want. Feel free to ignore it, but don't tell me what I can and can not post about.

Don't be a D-bag. :rolleyes:

Exactly. This isn't a thread about all the other .380s on the market. It's just for the folks who carry and use the Sig P232.

Go find some other thread to troll. I don't need you hijacking it and taking it off topic.

I had one for a little bit. It was accurate and reliable. It was a lot of fun to shoot and carried well IWB.

The double action trigger pull could be lighter. I would have been happy with about 8-8.5#'s. The single action was pretty good, but the trigger reset was long.

All in all it was a good little pistol. I wish I had never sold it. I had it back when the 380acp pistols took off and 380 ammo was rare in my area. It mostly served me as a suit gun. Very slick looking pistol.

I had a couple of P230's, although I eventually sold one off. The P230 has always been one of my favorite SIG's, and one of the few I kept. Easy to shoot, easy to carry. I always used mine as a back up to something else, with my two favorite types of carry with them being an ankle holster, and a Galco Executive shoulder holster. The Executive being my favorite. Im not normally a shoulder holster fan, but this is actually one of my favorite holsters after the IWB type. Since got my first for the P230, I got others for my Glock 26's and S&W 642's.

This is the P230 in one....

* the lack of a slide release. Like the PPK the slide is held open on the last round, but to hold the slide open you need an empty mag.
You can lock the slide back without a mag using your little finger. It works on most guns that have the last round hold open feature ( I figured it out with my PPK's). Using an over hand grip on the slide, thumb facing rearward, as the slide comes to a stop rearward, you slip your little finger in the ejection port, and lift the stop up with the tip of your little finger. Give it a try a couple of times and youll get the idea.

The double action trigger pull could be lighter.
My P230s DA triggers were both very nice, and some of the nicest DA triggers on guns of that type Ive owned. Both were very smooth, and I didnt find them heavy at all. Perhaps them made changes in the later P232's in this respect?
