I just found out that the Orange County, CA Sheriff's Dept. does not allow lasergrips on CCW handguns.

I have a S&W 340PD J-Frame that used to have Crimson Trace 405 lasergrips installed on it. The 405's are the compact grips that have the really neat "air pocket" over the backstrap.
This design really improves the wrist-breaking recoil that the 340PD produces, and actually makes this into a gun that you can comfortably shoot 38+P and .357MAG out of.

I mostly use this revolver as a pocket-carry gun, so what I am looking for is a rubber, closed-backstrap, compact set of grips - by compact, I mean that the bottom of the grip is flush with the bottom of the butt of the frame, so that your pinky will hang off.

I have seen closed-backstrap grips by Hogue, but they have a pinky-rest on them and they are too big for pocket-carry, IMO.

Pachmayr also has compact grips, but with an open backstrap.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Taurus makes stocks like you describe for their model 85 series. I have in the past modified S&W stocks to fit the Taurus, so I expect that one could do it the other way around.

To see some other possibilities go to: www.cdnnsports.com

But keep in mind they have a flat $19.99 handling & shipping charge, no matter how much stuff you order. So get your buddies together and see how much other stuff you can find that interesting. ;)

If you really like the 405 lasergrip, could you remove the battery? You would own a set of the most expensive rubber grips, but they fit your need.

Why not just save some money for the lasergrips? They're the greatest thing to happen to self-defense snubbies since hollowpoint ammunition methinks.

Pachmayr does make grips with the closed backstrap for the j-frame but they might be a littler bigger than what you want. Uncle Mikes also makes a closed backstrap boot grip.

The Taurus grips for a model 85 fit perfectly. I have a set on my S&W 642. The locator pin is in a different location, but is easy to drill a small hole to fit. They are the best I have found.

Thanks everybody for your replies.

I'll check out the Taurus grips.

I thought about removing the battery, but I believe what would be necessary to be legal would be to completely gut the laser gizmo out of the 405's, and I can't bring myself to do that with $200.00 grips - maybe Crimson Trace could send me an empty shell?

My understanding with Uncle Mike's is that they no longer make the J-frame boot grips since they had a falling-out with the Craig Spegel, the guy they licensed them from.
