I'm interested in getting a nice retro-looking AK. What I'd like is a fixed stock type with NICE WOOD FURNITURE, and a bayonet lug. It also needs to have a side-rail for mounting optics, as I want to put a Kobra sight on it.

I know the Romanian guns are like this, but I'd prefer something with better fit-and-finish. Anything out there? Are any Bulgarian AKs available as I described?

*shrug* Just giving the guy some options. If someone has a good reason why he shouldn't consider Vulcan an option, maybe they should say it. (Anyway, they don't appear to make an AK with wood furniture, so I guess it's pretty moot.)

So far I personally don't recall hearing anything bad. A friend of mine recently bought one of their Galil copies. Last I heard he loves it.

You could try the path I took--get a SAR-1 and refinish the wood, and touch up the metal. :)

It only slightly resembles the sap-covered, 90% parkerized, rough-as-hell POS that it was when I bought it "new."

Of the available AK's, the Bulgarian Arsenal rifles are about the top-of-the-line.

Quality of fit, finish, accuracy, and build quality makes them the Cadillac.
In addition, they have chrome lined, hammer forged barrels made on Steyr machinery that are possibly the finest AK barrels ever made.

Funny they would have an AK with a fine bottle of Single Malt Scotch. Perhaps a cheap bottle of vodka or a 40oz Old English 800 would be more appropriate. :p :D

Yeah I don't really equate a churchwarden-pipe-smoking scotch-imbibing person with the AK47 too often... Guess it's time to broaden my horizons (and smoke my pipe).

It's the simple pleasures in life... :) The AK, to me, is a work of art in its simplicity. Makes me wonder why it took all that time from the invention of the cartridge to 1947 to get the AKM invented.

No complex bits about it. No 9,458,423-rail system that is covered by four lights, two lasers, an Aimpoint, an EoTech, two vertical foregrips, six scopes, night vision, and a bipod. It's rugged and reliable. The only remotely tactical thing you may need is a sling.

I'd have to agree that a nice milled arsenal would be hard to beat. I enjoyed the feel and accuracy of it more than anything I've shot. I also wouldn't forget a Saiga conversion as others have mentioned. My unmodified saiga .308 will do less than 1.5" at 100 yds.

Dionysusigma: Nice churchwarden! Was starting to think I was the only other pipe smoker on board. What kind of lighter is that?

A saiga conversion could be another way to go, they have an optics rail. When you got it converted you could put some nice wood on it.
