Hey guys,

I need to ship an AK to a buddy of mine, I believe USPS will ship it, but will UPS or Fedex?

Any help would be appreciated, have never had to ship a firearm.

Unless your buddy is in the same state, you'll have to ship to an FFL and FFL will have to transfer it to him.

but it is his gun. I am just sending it to him, would I still need to send to an FFL?

legaly he can ship it to himself anywhere to anywhere.

i dont know how you can ship it. if HE was shipping it, id sugest HE puting his adress as the delivery adress and return adress.

* wink and a nod?

He just got back into country from the middle east, got divorced, so went straight to his land in CO. Wants a weapon with him out there, buying another one is last option because he already has a nice collection. Asked if I would send him one of his riffles that I have been storing in my safe while he has been away. Never thought it would be this complicated.

I want to do it right, but that would require me going to an FFL and having them send it to an FFL out there. Giant pain in the butt.

Should be able to send it directly to an FFL out there. Tell him to call around and ask if someone will do it cheap, especially for a recent Vet. Just make sure the FFL will accept from an individual, it's legal (Federally, anyway, check state laws) but some dealers don't like to.

If you do end up shipping it for him, then USPS will probably be your cheapest option. If so, I highly recommend you print out a copy of the applicable section of the postal rules (available on the USPS website) because, inevitably, the learning disabled behind the counter will have no idea how to handle a firearm (which you are required to declare).

+1 for what Navy87Guy said. You can send it yourself if the receiving dealer will accept it. I always ship rifles USPS, it is cheaper than UPS or Fedx.

I edited my answer because it appears to be incorrect. I don't want misinformation out there so I'm removing it. :)

As stated before USPS will be the cheapest and is A-OK to ship long guns.

I can't comment regarding the necessity of an FFL if it is already his gun.

If you decide that an FFL is not necessary, you can't use UPS or Fedex. Both require that either the shipper or receiver be an FFL. That said, I've never had to prove it. Both also require that any firearm be shipped overnight service ($$$).

Not that it applies here, but as others have stated you can ship a gun to yourself, however in my experience neither UPS or Fedex will do it. I don't know if USPS will or not.

Geojap, the OP is NOT a gunsmith and yes it must go to an 01 FFL holder, the example you stated regarding a gunsmith ONLY applies to Gunsmiths and yes when a smith recieves a firearm it goes into his bound book as long as it does not leave the gunsmiths possesion it can be shipped directly back to the person who sent it to him...... THIS ONLY APPLIES TO A LICENSED GUNSMITH NOT AN UN-LICENSED INDIVIDUAL...... ya can get can cost someone the right to ever be able to possess a firearm again if they were to follow such mis information.

BTW I'm NOT a C&R holder I AM an FFL01/SOT2 licensed gunsmith and importer though........

To the original poster, if your friend were to travel to your town he could ship the gun to himself he will be required to show ID if the shipper is on their toes that I.D will need to have the destination address on it or the originating address. Otherwise the only way to ship it without both of ya getting felony charges is for you to send it to an 01FFL holder

What dstorm1911 said.

922. Unlawful acts

(a) It shall be unlawful—

(5) for any person (other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector) to transfer, sell, trade, give, transport, or deliver any firearm to any person (other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector) who the transferor knows or has reasonable cause to believe does not reside in (or if the person is a corporation or other business entity, does not maintain a place of business in) the State in which the transferor resides;

It continues with exemptions for inherited firearms and loaning a firearm for temporary sporting use.

yeah, and that is the problem. He is in CO and I am in GA. I will go to the shop down the street and have them transfer as soon as he gets me an FFL out there to send to. Just seems silly since it is his weapon.

Kaizer, it may be his weapon.......... then again it may not how does the BATF know its not you who has sold a gun and are now tryin to ship it without goin through an FFL etc.... anyone could claim any given firearm is simply being sent to its owner etc.... the solution EVERY firearm gets shipped to an FFL on the recieving end ......... no more doubts or questions otherwise it would be a boon for prohibited persons they could all simply buy guns through the mail or online etc.. and get around any checks etc...

And I'm not even a fan of the restrictions but........ its currently the law etc...
