Who's getting a jump on deer season already?

September 26th is opening day for archery. I usually dont mess with my deer guns until October or so. I drew a week long tag to hunt a federal nature preserve thats mostly a giant wetland area. I need to find some hip waders and make the hour ride to scout. I also drew a tag to hunt a state park from September 26-Feb3. Its 3hrs away though so I will probably give it away. I got about 12 permission slips signed for anything from deer hunting to rabbit and squirrel only. I have one set of ladder sticks and a millenium treestand receiver in the tree for the last 3yrs or so that should probably be replaced. I forgot a camera thats been out there since October of last year. I will probably sneak out there in a week or so and take it down and put it elsewhere if the batteries arent exploded inside of it. I started shooting my compound bow for the first time in about 2yrs the other night. Not bad at 20yards but my shoulder gets weak after 20 or so shots. I already started making my season list. On a side note, if you guys hunt public or just have issues finding stands download OnX hunt on your smartphone and pay the $20yr fee. I used it last year to mark spots and find stands and it works very well. It even shows you the landowners and boundries.

1) Scout 4-5 farms for deer hunting.
2) Sharpen knives.
3) Scout the nature preserve.
4) Paint treestands and let them air out.
5) Tune broadheads.
6) Check the hang on stand for safety.
7) Move trail camera.
8) Put up 3 trail cameras.
9) Sight in crossbow.
10) Wash hunting clothes.
11) Load for deer rifles
12) Sight in deer rifles.

Cleared a few spots to get some sunlight through the canopy and planted a few small food plots. We'll see how they do but after a couple weeks, they seem to be off to a good start. Fingers crossed

Will get my treestands up in the next couple weeks. Love this time of year!

Grandson got a Nikon 3-9 scope on his 30-30 and sighted in some 125 core lock , so he’s stoked and ready for White tail that we just so happen to be infested with :)

Trying to make some inaccessible hunting areas easier to get at.....built a bridge for the Atv's to get in and out. Checking (7) cameras, mostly does and fawns. Picked up a few more arrows for the kids and another safety harness.

I just got back from my 150 acre place. Met with a well driller and a carpenter to provide more amenities to the cabin and managed to bush-hog about 30 trails between and around the pines. I already saw 11 deer on those new trails, 5 of them bucks in velvet. However, it rained 71/2" in 4 days and stopped a bunch of planned improvements.

I found one trashed camera where the strap was broken and the rain ruined the inside. I put up 2 tripods, a new camera and a new feeder. If it weren't for a 4wd tractor and 2 bush hogs, I wouldn't have been able to do much. I tore up the drive shaft on the cheap mower but was able to switch to the heavy-duty one and finish.

I am optimistic about a good season .. bow starts on the 19th of Sept. I just hope the hurricanes stay away this year.

A 125 gr. is a good bullet for a .30-30 IMO. Mine won't shoot 150s or 170s worth a flip. A Sierra 125 HP and IMR 3031 does the trick for it.

Took advantage of some unseasonably warm and humid weather and a fresh mosquito hatch to fire up the brush blade and clear the summer's growth on about 1/2 mile of my trails to stands. Used the gas powered outdoor shower 3 times Saturday, and twice today. Took some solace in the fact that the last time I saw these trails it was 20 below zero. Had a few major windfalls to clear, so the chainsaw got some action too. That's extra fun when you're sweated through your clothes and cutting dry-rotted jack pine. Gotta do the work when I have time, regardless of weather. This weekend was brutal though. Got much less accomplished than I planned. Do have a couple good ones on the cameras though, so at least I have that going for me.

Just about ready....trails are mowed for the final time, cleanup of shooting lanes is finished, installed camo netting on one of the stands.

One more last project is to put in a concrete river crossing. Not an absolute must for hunting, but drought conditions dried up the river flow to a point where it made sense to do it this fall. Waiting on the construction contractor to finish up other projects, then they can bring in excavators and Cat to do the crossing.

Checked cameras and feeders twice this week. Only saw 21 does and bambis the first afternoon. From 5:30 to 7:00 deer were coming out of the woodwork. The owner has a commodity barn that is open. Even with tractors and ATV's parked there I saw 8 deer go into it right before dark. He said he has even seen them in there at noon. Today I pulled cards and had deer at one feeder through most of the day. I set 2 climbing stands and saw 5 deer before 5:00 P.M. Now if only the wind will cooperate.

2 more days.

I've been getting pictures of mostly does and pigs, but that's okay.
If I can get some venison in the freezer, I'll be happy. Or some pork. I won't turn that down either.

Wife and I sighted in the deer guns, got a few tree stands up and checked on the fall/winter kill plots this past Monday...now we have to wait until the firearm deer season. :(
