Who's Here Going To Be First To Buy A 21 Sharp?

Why's that? One would just shorten the 22mag case enough to allow for a longer projectile for greater BC, longer copper projectiles or a greater mass lead projectile. The only downsides I could see is if the standard 22wmr twist rates weren't fast enough to stabilize or the potential for a carbon ring from the shortened case. If the new cartridge dies one can go right back to 22WMR.

The main premise behind the 21 Sharp is to create a copper only hunting round and were getting longer projectile length, seems to me a shortened 22WMR to allow for a longer projectile is low hanging fruit.

That roll is already filled for me with 17hmr. I would want it to go into a semi auto 22lr pistol, not a 22 mag rifle.

Shortened 22mag already exists, it's the predecessor to 22 mag, called 22 WRF. You would just need to take that case and load with with a 40 grain vmax or similar copper bullet like that, I just don't have a desire for such a thing. No need or desire for copper bullets here.

Ya know, I’m rarely an early adopter and I even have hater tendencies about new cartridges. However, I can usually, deep down, be understand the concept and philosophy though.

Not with this one.

If it were to become available in a subsonic loading that was close in price to CCI standard velocity 22lr then I guess I could get more interested.

Sounds like you might have interest in the .22 short that came out around 168 years ago. Pretty rare these days but more plentiful than 21 sharps in the places I go.

The review in post#11 implies that non-lead, heeled bullets don't shoot well in 22LR. I can't comment on that because I've never seen one, let alone shot one.

If that is true, maybe this is a better mouse trap for hunting non-lead. Nothing that I need but maybe a few other people will. Time will tell if lead bans become more prevalent?

None at all. The exact same shortcomings of 22LR with 10 grains less bullet, no thanks.

But in all seriousness I would like to try a 21 sharp pistol, but in order for me to have any interest in it at all in a rifle, they will have to make a subsonic loading so I can shoot it suppressed.

I will pass as what can it do that my 22 hornet loads cant do better plus I have loads of hornet brass.

The 21 Sharp is aimed at those that want better accuracy and/or are hunters with a rimfire.

Where I live, there are times of the year when you can hunt or be out with a rimfire, but NOT with any centerfire, so those folks may be interested in the Sharp.

Light loaded CF's are not legal...

21 Sharp Ammunition Offerings:

  • Game & Target 25 grain, Copper Matrix – The Winchester designed, lead-free, rimfire bullet produces sub 1.5 MOA groups at 50 yards, outperforming all lead-free .22 LR offerings available today.

1.5 MOA at 50 yards is more than 3/4”, I don’t think you will set any new records with it. Certainly makes the advertisement/artical false right off the bat.

I've seen road-test that were much better than that, so as usual, it depends on what THAT gun will do so let's see what it does as more rifles come online chambered for the 21.

Some will use the new round and word will spread. The quality of the word will determine this cartridge’s popularity. I am not interested simply because my .22 category is tuned to perfection - I do not have a need for improvement. My favorite centerfires are still the .308 and .243 - I do not have the need to improve as they do everything I need. Now if I am forced to change because the government legislates them away (ie lead use), then I will have to rethink my happy world of rimfire and centerfire. Change is a process and usually a choice - as President DJT always likes to say, “We’ll see what happens.”

Nope not interested. I'd rather buy .22 caliber pellets, and buy the ramset 22 caliber cartridges used for driving nails in concrete and turn my cheapest 22 lr bolt rifle into a pellet gun. Saw a video where the pellet goes through a circular saw blade.

It's new....it's different...and most of us old guys are probably not that impressed or willing to spend on it....BUT....some new fangled 6.5 Creedmore super man bun dude might love it.....so....if it sells a few guns and some ammo.....let's a few gun writers publish a few articles.....what's it hurt- ....maybe it will help a keep the industry going for another year-

It's too early to judge it. I've done a little reading on it and it has it's merits. Not like the 30 Super Carry which is 100% hype.

The 30 super carry COULD have been useful if someone would have made a gun to take advantage of the reduced diameter, instead of just putting it in a gun that can already hold 9mm.
