I was thinking about it and it occurred to me that many tools have an alternate use or can be substitute by other tools.

If you need a Philip's head you can often make do with a smalled slotted screwdriver.

Have I used a knife as a pry bar? Yes. (Sorry Hso.)

If I need a rough measurement, I've used my arm span (6' on the money) or my hand span (9" on the money).

But if you're in the situation where you need a gun, there really isn't any other substitute for it. The gun is the only tool of its kind, nothing else can even come close to what it can do as far as power vs. portability (for those of you who are going to argue that a bow and arrow can also send objects flying).

So if anyone asks why you NEED a gun, the simple answer is, "Nothing else does the same thing."

Maelstrom: the one problem with your argument is that anti's don't understand logic.

So until you can come up with an emotional need to counter their irrational emotional fear of guns, I'm afraid you need to keep working. :)

You probably don't, right now. Most people never need one.

But things can change very quickly. You could go home tonight and find your wife's college roommate sleeping on the couch, on the run because her abusive ex-husband just got out on parole.

You probably don't need a gun, yet. But when you do, you'll need one very badly.

"Why do I own guns? Just lie back on the couch and tell me about your childhood, your fears, and your fantasies. That way, perhaps, I will be able to understand your inner needs well enough to distill an answer from the complexities of the universe that is both truthful and simple enough for you to understand. You sound a lot like me :)
"Why I Carry a Gun"

I tell them about my neighbor who was killed 75 feet from his back door while working in his garden. Two gentlemen of darker persuasion robbed and killed him right in his back yard. I tell them about a friend who was shotgunned in a robbery w/o him ever reaching his revolver under the counter. I tell them about a friends son who walked into a gang style killing at a convience store and never was able to see his wife and children again. I tell them about a buddies daughter who was killed on a Sunday afternoon on the way to the grocery store. If they persist that firearms are not necessary I continue telling about another friends son who was shot through his pickup window just four miles from here. My best bud's wife who was accosted in a crowded shopping center parking lot or his mother who was purse snatched with 20 people watching and no one helped her. Then about my old fishing buddy who was beaten nearly to death in the town's post office a 7 PM by a robber. Most of the time I don't even bother with the sad tales and just go on about my business. Sooner or later they will "see the light"--if it doesn't kill them in the process. wc

I hope you don't live near me. You're bad luck.

06... I don't wanna be your buddy....

usually... I just ask them how much money they have in their wallet.... and their PIN number...

Whenever anyone asks me why I need a gun, I ask them why they need expensive clothes/a fast car/gourmet food/etc. Seems to work pretty well.

Whatever works. But if I was arguing "their" side, I'd say that none of those things were designed to kill stuff.

In case I need to shoot something.

My favorite!

You don't need a gun. You don't need a roof over your head either. Until it starts raining... but then things get too wet to build one...

+1! :D

Many forget that the anti-gun person has his/her mind made up. You cannot confuse them with facts. In place you must confuse them with divergent concepts. ;)

Why do I need a gun? HMMMM, now that is a good question in reality. To each thier own answer if any. I know having guns gets me out of the house to gun shows, gun ranges, gun stores. I need the excercize. At gun ranges myself and friends shoot at each other targets, put exploding devices on unsuspecting people's targets, use hand gun shot sheels to comfuse people, spend a lot of time telling gun stories to each other, go out to a bar afterwords. Now if there were no guns, what else would we be doing????????
