Why does the 7MM-08 tempt me?

I hear it’s a really good hunting cartridge and my nephew is a firm believer in that round. But why do I want one when I have enough hunting round choices in my gun safe? I have rifles in 6.5 CM, .308, 30-06, .300 WSM and even a .338 WM. Oh and I can’t forget about the .44 Magnum and 45-70 lever guns. All are well suited for Deer, Bear and Elk so why should I get one in 7MM-08?

Am I crazy, greedy or obsessed?
I think you just want one. You should subtly let your S.O. know this desire so the he/she can acquire one for you as a Christmas present. I got my first 9 mm pistol that way, although it was a birthday present.

Well, if you do that you’ll also need a .338 Fed and a .358 Win to complete the set. May as well clear a space in the gun safe
Oh ya!!! I forgot about the federal… I find them both interesting, but the 358 is the only one I find interesting enough to spend money on. I’m still chewing on the idea of a fast twist 243 with a deeper throat to run some of the new bullets. It’d be a barrel burner.

When I started hand loading, I got out of .30 calibers altogether. My Model 7 in .308 was the last to go, replaced by another in 7mm-08. Had I known then what I know now, I'd have started with 7mm cartridges. Lots of options in .284, and the 7mm-08 is nicely placed, capable of almost everything. I like mine.

Though the 7mm08 has a well deserved reputation as a fine all-around hunting caliber it actually began it's development and legitimate life as a target caliber. Beginning as the brainchild of Wayne Leek, a Remington engineer, best known for perfecting Remington's M-1100 and a few others. Upon retirement Wayne escaped the cold winters of New York for cozy Arizona. Which happened to be a hotbed of silhouette shooting, a game Wayne fell passionately in love with. The .308 was the reigning caliber in silhouette circles at that time and Wayne was soon to realize that the .308's recoil took a lot of the fun out of banging steel profiles of pigs and sheep and a milder caliber would be preferable. It so happened about that time shooters in other high power games were loading and shooting a milder wildcat they made simply by necking .308 cases for lighter, softer kicking 7mm bullets. The combination was called, guess what? So Wayne convinced his old pals back at Remington that if they simply added their family name to 7-08, and marketed rifles and ammo for same they would have a winner. Which is why the very first M700 7-08's were BDL varmint style rifles with heavy barrels, their thinking being focused on silhouette shooting with sporter/target style rifles. Turned out that the 7-08 never caught on among target shooters because its recoil wasn't all that much less than .308's, but was discovered as an excellent hunting round. Which is why a rare number of 7-08 varmint/target rifles were made and now sought by Remington collectors. This one is rigged with a 20X scope for silhouette competition but has had little use. I don't have a 7mm-08 currently, but it is a great medium size game round. I did have a BLR in 7-08 and did shoot a whitetail with it.

Will it do anything that a 308win or 6.5CM won't? 🤔 Well know! But if it was about need I would still have my original 30-06 and never bought another rifle....
I have three safes full of "needs", many I don't shoot anymore. But, they're there if I ever need them. ;)

Forget the 7mm-08 and get a 275 Rigby. :)

Many centerfire calibers/ cartridges are an exercise in performance redundancy - the differences being academic. Avid shooters will become bored over time with their tuned rigs and simply want something different. There is no logical justification for the addition of a 7-08 to the OP’s arsenal and the OP doesn’t need a justification - buy one if you want one. In turn, you do not need permission nor support from this blog to buy one - if it intrigues you enough, buy one. The 7-08 is as good as any, yawn!

I got my 7MM-08 by accident. I knew what it was but it was new. I wanted a Remington 788 carbine in .308 in the early 1980s. A hunting buddy wanted one too. Butt time went on and they were discontinued. I found a new to me back roads gunshop. Well what did he have? Three new 788 carbines. Two .308 and one 7mm. I asked him to hold the .308s and he said yes. Couple days later we went to the shop. One .308 was sold leaving one of each. My friend didn't reload and had no intention to . I already was loading for 5 rounds. So I took the 7mm and he the 308. Still got it. Super accurate compact rifle.

This is why lol. My go to for everything, 140 gr nosler BT hand loads, will kill everything with great results, I truly love this caliber I'm shooting a remington Model 7 . IMO it's better than 308, 6.5 and 30/06 wow now that's a tuff one for me to say!! I was leaning towards a 284 win. But the 7mm-08 was the better decision at the time and I'm glad I went this route. It's a must have and won't kill your shoulder on the range. It's just one of those calibers you gotta have lol
