Why does the HK USP Mk 23 cost so much more than other USP variants?

Well I hate the G21 and it’s been a number of years since I’ve handled one. So I am no help there.

As for the grip. Side to side MK23 and USP they are virtually the same. At the widest spot of both the MK23 is 3mm bigger forward and aft
I am not a big fan of the G21 grip either. Too big, and too square and blocky. I got rid of mine but still have a G20 which is the same size.

Having handled a couple Mk.23s, I get the impression that the designer took the .45ACP, pretended it was a 35kpsi cartridge like 9x19 and went from there. The ability to sustain a diet of 230gr@1000FPS loads is is not without merits.

HK put some weird proprietary rail that isn't compatible with most lights
Actually, HK MK23 and USP were the first pistols equipped with a rail - HK's rail just didn't become the industry standard.
I would love a 10mm H&K!!
Some people have converted USP40s to 10mm Auto. Conversion requires a slightly modified 2011 magazine, 10mm barrel (re-chambered .40 S&W works well) and a cut on the ejection port if you want to be able to eject a live round.
Here's a video on one of these conversions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzh16zi55G0

Mine is in an electronic wall safe near my bed. I just can't bring myself to sell it. It comes set up for 45 supers. It suppresses superbly. I think breech stays locked longer than my g21 and it's mass guaranteed great extraction and ejection. I modified the the rail to take a light / Lazer and I have a real issue kydex holster for it. I only have four mags for it.

There is a video on YouTube from forgotten weapons that covers them in detail.

They are big, but people completely exaggerate their size.
There are also several different adapters to solve the rail compatibility issue.

The way to look at the Mark 23 is that it is basically a USP prototype and it's way more overbuilt than it really needs to be. That overbuilding does come with an increased cost. I bought mine because of low the recoil is compared to any other .45 I've shot. That massive slide gives it less recoil than some 9mms I've shot which made the extra cost worth it to me.

They were not heavily imported in large quantities. Add to that the popularity of it in media such as Metal Gear Solid, movies and the costs goes up. I've shot a Mk23 once, she's bulky.

Probably because it was used by Bruce Willis's SEAL's in the movie "Tears of the Sun", and by the real SEAL's, IRL, and, just because HK still hates you as a lowly civilian. :)
Yeah, probably because they get questions like why is one model more expensive than another 😂

I would think part of it is economy of scale. They don't sell a lot of the Mark 23.

I liked mine, didn't love it though. I have big enough paws to comfortably shoot it. I traded it away for far more than I paid for it during 2020. it was accurate enough, but compared to a 1911, I was faster, more accurate, and happier with the 1911.
The trade offers were heavily in my favor lol.
